FT 857D
i just got myself a ft857d in the hope of getting some time to go mobile in the summer ?
althought this little rig is rather ugly it does have some nice features although i would have liked a simpler way to alter the output power.
ive only had the radio two days so i am still finding out what it does, for the price i paid it aint bad, i would like to hear from anyone else who has or has owned a 857 in the past....what are your gippes with the radio.
the radio is around £550 at this time new, it isnt a lot of money for such a diverse radio.

well after using the radio for a week or two now, i can say, i like it, the way you have to alter menus to change the power level is annoying, but apart from that....i do like it . it doesnt run HOT like the 706's ive had, the DSP does what it should, ive had some nice audio reports, rx is good with no major signs of breakthrough on VHF, its got 200 memories so i got every frequency i use on a regular basis stored in them, it seems to be a bit better on recieve on HF than the ft100 i had.
im going out mobile this weekend to give it a blast in the car.

Re: FT 857D
After 6-7 months of using the 857
Mark would you still recommend one?

Re: FT 857D
YES, i would have another one, ive tried a few 706s as well, the 857d seems just as good as the 706. the 706 getts really hot, even when your just rx-ing the fans turn on. the 857d doesnt get no where as hot as the 706, the fans only come on when you tx. the screen is a bit small but does the job. the only gripe i have with the 857d is that the power plug is hanging from the back on a short lead. rather than being fixed to the rear panel, although to be fair there isnt a lot of room on the back of the radio, so i guess this is why its on flying leads.
performance wise theres not much in it. price wise, i would have the 857d anytime over the 706. (personnal preference)

Re: FT 857D
Have an 857d in the mobile since April this year. As far as Im concerened it is excellent rx/tx and I can compare it to the NOISY/HOT 706mk2g.
It also has all the bands and the dsp makes it sweet on rx.
I think you`ll have many happy hours of DX.

Re: FT 857D
All radios loose value quickly, come to think of it most things do. as for the 857D it is what it is, its a shack in a box, its a diverse radio, has all the bands most people would ever want or need, it isnt trying to be a top end radio, obviously a dedicated HF radio is better but you dont see many FT2000 under the dash board, it is after-all a do everything mobile radio, at a very competative price, be you a seasoned operator or a new starter.

Re: FT 857D
it does the job its meant to, its small and got it all.
ive heard £200 radios and they sound the same as £3000 radios, half of the "features" mean nothing but a selling point! the 857 is a great rig. (and its tiny) pity the other makers cant match it for the money.
