keeping ATU indoors

i got an old ATU/AMU E-ZEE match
http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/7794
i want to use it on an inverted L.
dose it have to live down the bottom of the garden? or could i put mini8 strait into the back (maybe via a couple of so239's)so it can live in doors?
just trying to save me legs

on your invert L just connect youre screen to a earth rod and the inner core to you inverted L wire, run your feeder along the ground to the shack.Always have your ATU in the shack makes sense thats how i had my L set up and it worked a treat.

i would prefare to have the ATU in house but was reading or listening to something...........brain storming..........nope cant find it.
saying that the ATU should be as close to antenna as possible to remove the RF from the coax. seams plausible to me but i don't know to much.

with regards to ladder line, of which i have never used. wouldn't that radiate RF more than coax?

this link above http://www.tydraig.com/inverted%20l.html is exactly what i'm up to emoticon

Tony have a read of this it answers a few questins as to rf by adding more earth rods and ground wires

yep that give me a head ache before bed emoticon
i'm putting a lot of faith in the dampness of the somerset levels. my vertical is going up a fiberglas whip away from the house, the main ground will be six foot scaffold driven into the high water table type ground we have here(praying not to hit nothing on way down ).
i have some other earth's mapped in my head to add later; next to the house and am interested particularly if this will improve~ reduce local qrm

i put up the inverted L to the fiberglass fishing pole today & thinking on the scaffold for an earth rod i guess it wont be any good due to corrosion, that will be why they use copper i suppose other than the conductivity. good copper stake added to shopping list emoticon .
i removed the top three sections from the 10 meter fiberglass pole & for a temporary convenience of slipping it in the scaffold, the bottom two as well. hopefully this will reduce the shock to my neighbors & at a later date it can creep a bit higher. presently the top is around 3 feet lower than the house gutter.
as many will know it was a rather stormy day. i put up this antenna http://www.tydraig.com/inverted%20l.html using firstly 1.75mm coated copper wire, this caught the wind bad and was flapping all over the place so i reduced the cable to a much lighter bell wire, and still because of the storms i removed the trap too, only as a temp measure.
i think the antenna is receiving well, its certainly a lot better than before, including QRM. i am not planning on transmitting on this radio but after what a ham i met a couple of weeks ago showed me that to have a good SWR improves RX quality. i never would of thought that unless i seen it.
ATU is in doors now awaiting the introduction to some min8. i'll weight & see if i can replicate what the ham did with his ATU to remove QRM yet improve signal.

if anyone is interested i bought the fiberglass pole on ebay & what is nice is its a silver grey color so it more resembles a typical aerial mast than a fishing pole and doesn't have a stark contrast to the sky.

regards
tony

nice to see you,v managed to get the "L" in place Tony lets hope it works as mine did for me.As for laying ground wires down if you have the room lay them out in a fan shape and hammer a copper pipe at the end of each wire it may help grounding the scaffold tube and dont forget plenty of water be it natrual rain or from the hosepipe it all helps.

Re: keeping ATU indoors

I'm pleased with the reception so far coming in from west coast of America to China.
N4LEM, Ray; from Florida is on 20m at the moment. i know he is using 1kw but what is interesting is he is talking ground radials. Ray has 120 of them! must be something in it.
i picked up for cheep in tool-station a four foot copper earth and clamp today, haven't fitted it yet as i'm toying with the idea of an inverted 'v' due to the bend in the fishing pole. i have not much space for a counter guy wire to keep the pole strait but shall have a play around first. i think the 'L' is neat and tidy.
watering the earth tip taken on bored, thanks scottiejohn.
regards
tony

the BBC etc spend more money on their grounding systems than the do on the antenna part. most people run a fan of wires in the soil of the yard or a grid system.
