Am i being a plonker?!!

Rather than overwork my ss6900n i have a set of rm kl203's which i thought id drive at about 5w giving me a final power output of about 100w?
My first query being, im checking my swr/setting the power output of my radio (5w so as not to over drive the amp) on fm and then moving over to usb. is this corect?
Secondly, on usb with no modulation i am showing no power output and obviously the louder i speak the more output is shown, the only problem is when the power drops when i speak the amp is constantly cutting in and out as it needs a certain amount of power to make it "chime in" this doesn't sound right to me?!! brand new to ssb so treat me as a complete wally!!!!!!

Hi, thats right, is the amp set to SSB? this will alter the relay setting so it doesn't keep clicking in and out so much. But you can use the amp on FM if its better for you.

Can you drive these amps with 10w?

Re: Am i being a plonker?!!

hello again and thanks for the reply,
yes they were set to ssb and uping the power from my radio to 20w (whilst measuring on fm, the amp instructions say they will take up to 20w ssb)seams to help but they still drop out every now and then at the quiet points of modulation when txing normaly.
do you think this will have a huge effect on my outgoing transmition when dxing? ie me cutting in and out.
as for fm, thats more for local contacts isnt it? and most fm/cb'ers local to me are what made me persue ssb!!!!

Sorry I meant you can leave the amp on FM with the radio on SSB, this may help with the relay clicking in and out. It should make any difference to your out going modulation.

Run the amp at as low input you can with the highest output. 20w drive might not increase the output any more than 15w or even 10w for instance as the maximum the transistors will do is set. emoticon
