Top,
The rebuild will be worth it.
An excellent antenna with it's 4 x 1/4 wave horizontal radials for good low angle radiation.
I think Hy-Gain ceased production in the 80's or early 90's.
A modern day equivalent is from Jay in Mojave Desert: http://www.a1antennas.com/
Mount it a minimum of one half wavelength above ground for optimum results.

Re: INFO anyone got any info/experiance on the Hy-Gain Penetrator 5/8?
thanks 148, i did a bit of digging on the interweb and found that DX enginering are selling a penetrator 500 again, its been brought back from the dead. i also found Hy-Gain sell the spare parts i need for my old version so will get the bits ordered. The I-10K is a bit pricey for me and i dont think i will ever be using 10K of power

I often get the Penetrator and Interceptor mixed up when a station has given their working conditions, unless of course written up. Either way whenever I hear the name typically signals I RX are strong. Never used either but they do use them stateside and work well.
Another antenna that we tend not to find easily over here and you tend to hear about them from Italian stations are the Mantova/Mantoba. I think they are a similar type of antenna 5/8 wave with decent size ground planes. (1.6M it seems so not quite 1/4 wave length)

Always get good reports from the Italians using them.
Sirio seems to rule the roost for the UK Italian import market though.
