More snobbiness on the ham bands.
I am stil steaming slightly...
I have just been listening on 80m to a small 3-way net, where an obviously inexperienced guy (an M6) called in.
One op seemed to making things deliberatey difficult for this new guy, then had the cheek to suggest he should listen more to the raio before starting to tansmit. This op was incidentally using incorrect phonetic code and was evidently no expert where radio conduct was concerned...
We all had to make the decision to pick up that mic for the first time, and the poor guy I'm speaking about may well have been on his first QSO as he was obviously nervous.
Thanks to this biggot, it may possibly be his last.
What is it with some of these guys? Are they tryng to kill the hobby?
Perhaps he would get a better welcome on the freebands.

I have also witnessed this myself as well, some peoiple are proper knobs.
I used to race bikes, and let me tell you bike racers, and moter racers in general are not known for being nice guys. In fact most of the people I ever met during my 25 plus years in motor sport were self centered twats. However, when a new guy turned up, we all helped him out, with kit, circuit knowledge and any help we could possibly provide. Even though, generally we were all up our own bottoms 
Never would anybody be left without a ride, a part, a bit of kit or some valuable advice etc. A newbie was as much part of us as anyone.
With some hams, the problem, for my part, is the difference in calls. What if your call sign was the same no matter what level or in what year you became a amateur radio op? Then what would these knobs do? They're made to feel superior just because of their badge of honour. Well stick it where the sun dont shine buddy
I've made all of them look like fools at one time or another Dont get me wrong 99% of radio ops, whether ham or not are brilliant people far better than those I used to associate with But a few are complete merchant bankers

Its not happened to me (yet) but I have heard similar things happen on 20m. Have not used or even listened in on anything other than 11m for about 2 months now, have just lost all interest in the amateur bands. I enjoy the more laid back and friendly atmosphere on 11m and there are a lot of guys on there who should give the amateurs a few lessons in how to operate.

Having been away form the bands for decades (that’s scary), I thought I would use the good old internet to get me back on track. I honestly thought the ‘stuffiness’ for want of a better word, that made me shy away form amateur years ago would have gone away, but everywhere I look, I find disappointing stories like this.
Those very few awkward & frankly unpleasant operators must understand the hobby will pretty much disappear without fresh meat so they ought to be welcoming new members as much as possible if their passion for ‘the hobby’ is genuine.
That said, although I still feel a little bit cautious, I have had good contact from my local amateur club & I am looking forward to starting foundation training soonish. My skin is a lot tougher these days too.
I suspect most radio operators, be they Amateurs, Sidebanders, or CBers, probably share a similar interest in the hobby so what’s the problem? But remember also that its not just Radio……..these people surround us and can be found looking down their noses, tutting & shaking their pompous heads where ever we go.

Dan, its something you should still go for and then decide if its for you. I have a good friend who done the foundation and then gone and passed his intermediate and he has never looked back, he really enjoys it-dont think he has been on 11m since! The Amateur Radio club near me has some real nice guys in it, great to go for a pint with and are all very helpful but its just not for me! The foundation course is simple and I met lots of good lads there. Who knows when 11m is dead again I might have a renewed interest in the other bands, my licence will not run out so its always there if I want it.

its funny because on 2meters i havnt come across any of the radio snobbery, everyone i have spoke to has been very helpfull towards a new ham even giving me wire antennas and little projects that would help me get the intermediate. This isnt just in my area either, i found while down in south devon/cornwall people to be very friendly and helpfull even helped me try out my first echo link contact.
It seems the callsign snobbery in the main is on the HF side of things, ive heard it on most of the bands and its a shame. The only thing we can do is persavere and carry on trying/useing HF, these idiots wont be around for much longer and hopefully the younger generation of radio ops wont be as snobby.
I havnt been on the ham bands for a couple of months now but really would like to experiment with 80 and 40 meters and maybe even get a net going with the more friendly operaters out there.

yeh i think that would be a good idea, i have a 40m dipole up at the moment which does tune on 80. I spoke to an irish chap down on 85m on the antenna but it was very noisey, i find in band its not so bad. we will have to arrange something to try it out.
