Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
40m then?
I have resonant antennas for both, so no problem.

Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
i have not witnessed this snobbery yet (maybe because i hold an M0 call sign? i dont know.
i find most dx stations are always happy to speak to a new ham op, so am i. if you feel you are given the shoulder, remember the callsign and never speak to them again.
dont forget, some people have nothing else to do than radio.....its their life(sad)

Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
guys, any thoughts on if i removed the whip on my wilson 5000 mobile whip, wrapped a few turns of wire round the exposed thread, what would be a good lengh of wire as a quick portable antenna to run out to a tree in order to work 20,40 and 80 via my mfj 941 tuner?

Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
A 941 should allow a random wire to be used & if you want to work 20 - 80 meters with minimum tuning problems then 74 feet is a good length to start at.
W0IPL has a very good page on random wires which is worth looking up.
A good buy could also be a 9:1 balun, this allows the antenna to be fed against a earth stake, it reduces background noise, this be especially good on 80 meters & makes loading at the ATU even easier.
Some one on ebay sells half decent 9:1's for well under £20 including postage, if you do not want to spend close to that plus the efort in building one.

Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
Hi
Just thought I would add my feelings - have been licensed for over 30 years - also passed my RT for flyng and I was thinking of chucking it all in - then I stumbled across "555" didn't know it existed - with regards to 80m I found it extremely clicky even more so if you have a dialect and generally cold to new callsigns.
The last few weeks on 11m although propogation has been hopeless has given me more enjoyment and rekindled my interest in radio. If you have gardens big enough to erect half waves on 80 and 160 then the ham bands are for you - if you are the quy with limited space, budget and power and trying to do the best with a loaded vertical or similar - you will get more encouragement on 11m. (my old boss used to have a toast - never above you - never below you - always beside you) had my say now back to the vino

I've heard this same thing said more times than I can remember. People with loaded verticals or random wires trying to get onto 80, or even 40 just seem to get snubbed. The excuse is usually that they couldn't hear you, but the truth is nothing more than snobbery really.
It's kind of like a status symbol, if you have enough room to put an efficient antenna for 80M, you must have a lot of land, if you have a lot of land, so you must have a lot of money to be able to buy it in the first place. It can't be just me who has heard most of these guys on HF taking like they have a plum stuck in their mouth.......

Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
I agree.
The thing about 555 is there is none of this class distinction, as none of the self-created calls give away age, wealth or experience. We are all there purely for the fun of it - something which seems to be missing in some minds on the lower ham bands.
Contests - now, I know some hate them, but at least stations actually want to speak to you then! I have little interest in the ham bands other than contacting special event stations, or contests - the rest, for all I care, can continue to lecture for 10 minutes at a time about how their tomato plants are growing and taking the pee out of M3 & M6 licences...

Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
That's a good point Andy about the callsigns, the new amateur call signs are definitely segregated in the minds of some of them old hams (though not all of them).
Operating on 20m and above is good and does not have that same level of elitism, as for 40m and 80m I know stations who simply don't use them and prefer the 45m and 86m alternative for rag chews where everybody is the same, and you cant blame them, in fact half of them old gits who complain probably started on unofficial bands or have used them and enjoyed them at some stage.
It's just a pit there is so many doughnuts up on 11m to justify what some of those old guys says.
