Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
im all up for a net on 80 mtrs, or any other band, i to had some bad attitude aimed towards me when i first had my callsign (1995) so i do know what its like... i didnt expect this at all, for years previously i had listened to the shortwave bands and it was the friendly attitude that convinced me to go for my call...... how had it changed so suddenly ?
these days i give back as good as i get, dont take the C**P of these so called hams. give it back to them. dont lie down and be belittled from these people.

Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
There is actually a "No Nonsense Net" which takes place some evenings around 3.776 - there seems to be no particular pattern or purpose, but I notice many ops are M3/M6/2E0. Casual chatting with a good many stations calling in - quite CB like in many ways, and I reckon that's good.
Also, anyone listened to the guys on 1.933?
They don't seem to care too much for the traditional formalities either, and it can take an hour or more before you hear a callsign - how's that for sticking two fingers up??
And they have a web page:

Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
Simon (204) was telling me about 1933 earlier when we was chatting on 11m, sounds like quite good banter
Trouble is I've sacrificed top band for better across the rest of HF. Mind you I can still RX ok

Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
the 1933 net is ok to listen to, but they dont make it easy to join in, you either fit there click or they dont want to know.

Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
Can't comment as I haven't yet tried to join in, but if anyone has a quarter wave for 80, a temporary loading coil can be wound and placed near the feedpoint - not the most efficient method, but I've just done it (literally, 10 mins ago) and it works. Coil data available for anyone who wants to give it a try - just ask. and I'll go out and measure/count the coil turns.

Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
Hi folks!
I came across your board and have joined.
I think your getting your ticket and getting on together as a net is a great idea. 80m (just like our 75m band in the States) does have it's share of ego-freaks, jerks, and down right tools, but all that shows is that ham radio is simply a reflection of life. There are tools in life, so why not expect that some of them will get their licences and show their backsides with 1.5kW?
The best way to get rid of snobs and jerks is to not talk to them. Eventually, they'll call CQ and no one will come back to them. Intentionally QRM'ing them does no one any good...and here, the intentional interference makers get tracked down and fined.
From what I have read of this board--you have plenty of good folks who have some of the same interests...so why NOT get on and make your own net?
I hate to say it but 80m and 2m may not be your best bet. I wouldn't rule out 40m. For the foundation folks, if they are having problems being heard either upgrade the antenna or upgrade to the 100w licence. I'm licenced to run 1.5kw and haven't turned on the amp in over 15 years. 100 watts works just fine.

PS: If I'm pretty good at antennas and helping folks get the best bang for the "quid" as well as available antenna space. If I can help in anyway just hollar!

Re: More snobbiness on the ham bands.
I have never understood why some hams like to be "uppity" but awww well. There are some GREAT people on ham and each has their own story.
I remember a contact with a guy in Texas on 20m. He was an ex-WWII fighter pilot and his "rant" as it were, was that he was so happy with his P-47N because it was "as roomy as a Cadillac" and that when his squad's planes were replaced with P-51D's that he couldn't stand the new ride because it was so cramped. He LOVED being stationed in the UK back in teh day.
I also remember many contacts with Canadian VE1 guy (and later a great personal friend) who recounted his days in WWII in the Canadian Merchant Marine and his younger days in the 1930's riding the Trans-Canada Railway from Halifax to Vancouver--over the Canadian Rockies. I visited him twice in Nova Scotia before he passed away.
Another Canadian ham I talked to a bunch was the antenna "guru" to the Canadian government and had published MANY articles on antennas in ham magazines world wide. I learned more about antennas from that guy than most books I have read.
It seems for every single dopey foul-mouthed self-absorbed ham there's 10 with a great story to tell that you'd love to sit down and have dinner with their family.
I look forward to contacts with all of you...it will be in the friendly confines of the ham bands though
