14.5 dB over what. Reference point is required or this is meaningless.

lmao Rich emoticon

Avanti made high quality antenna's, with high quality parts, and they are very very good. The proof is in how many of these things are still around now even though it's been a lot of years since they were last produced.

As for gain, 14 dBi sounds in the right ballpark, maybe a little adventurous though. Even though the moonie 4 seems to have acheived legendary status, they are no better than a 4 ele crossed yagi, they have a quad reflector because it is equally sensitive to vertical and horozontally polarised signals, but they could have used a crossed yagi refelctor, it wouldn't make a difference. If I could choose betwen a moonie 4 or a 6 ele yagi, I would go with the yagi, or better still a moonie 6 :P

hi simon! well! what can we say about the avanti products that hasnt already been said over the years? some coming up to the ripe old age of 30+!!! and still going!!all i can say is i am proud to have used avanti antennas! albeit verticals! but they worked great and i miss them still!.... yes 14dbi! now that seems more like it! isotropic! i bet some of the modern antennas would not last 30 years!!? i sometimes wonder 1year hi hi!! just a question simon! do you think the old antennas are the best antennas? or do you think the best is to yet be found/invented?? there has been nothing like avanti/antenna specialists since they left the radio hobby!! a real shame! 73 rich.

Re: Avanti Moonraker 4

The parts are a longivity isue not really a performance isue. A Cosworth is fast but its still a Ford.
There is nothing special about this antenna its two antennae sharing a mutual reflector. Its a very short boom for 4 els so i doubt the claim of anything over [sign in to see URL] Max.
As for the other figures well you don't get anything for nothing so its got a high f/b then it can't have high gain something has to be sacrificed for the high f/b, and with that boom length its obvious what it is.
The optimum boom length for 4 els is .64 lamda, the max gain for 4 els is [sign in to see URL] theoretical, as this yagi is short as per ideal then it is mathematically imposible to get 14.5 dBi let alone dBd. The only way to get more gain on this boom is to feed more than one element ie co-phasing.
[sign in to see URL] spent his whole life as did Ode, proving the theories of parasitic element function, it works, and nobody argues this yet still these wild claims are banded about on packaging.
In a nutshell a 1 wavelength boom can if tuned obtain 10dBd Thats an 11m boom.
My 18m boom just makes [sign in to see URL] and thats huge, so [sign in to see URL] is pure myth.
The quality of this manufacturer is unquestionably very good, materials and application are excellent but in the bull sells equation it also rates highly. Nuff said.

hi john! good info! i dont know about anybody else but i usually dont take much notice of the gain figures!! but as you state its the bs that sells!! which it does!! by the bucket load!! the classic one [sign in to see URL] from a well know VERTICAL antenna!!!! i think we all know what it is? but it works!! the thing myself and simon i think were getting at was the quality of the antennas(avanti) and the design! there unique to most things on the market to day and still working!! and often copied! a question john!! as before! do you think the best design antennas have been made or the best it yet to be invented?? 73s rich.

Re: Avanti Moonraker 4

as you said Rich, the fact that the designs that the engineers at Avanti pioneered have been copied many times over by other people is the highest form of flattery. The main one that springs to mind is the Sigma 4, problem being that the copies are being made with much lower grade materials, in a way they have to do that or be priced out of the market. Google i-10K , its a 5/8th wave antenna made in the states for 11M. Very expensive but also very well made with super thick alli. Some people even claim to have had them survive hurricanes in the states. Put one up over here and it should last for ever. That's the only antenna currently being made for 11M that compares to the quality that Avanti used to produce, but like anything, ya gets what ya pays for.

As for new antenna designs, the basics will never change, pretty much everything has already been tried I guess. Variations of existing designs may pop up, but will all be based around the types of antenna we allready have, 1/4, 1/2 or 5/8 wave. Maybe John should mass market his 11M collinears and supply a nice 70 foot wooden mast with them all, lmao emoticon

Thats not a bad idea about producing a limited edition collinear! Its funny though that new inventions come from things like the space race, so if there's a space station up there or on Mars and they need good coms then hey presto the inventors kick in and create great things. I really rate this antenna though it ingenuative and claims aside is a top performer for its size all things considered. There's a company in the US still making a version for order only so although demand might be low its still being copied.
