Blast from the past - AM rig
The old Royce 619 has arrived - lovely old 70's AM rig it is too. A quick going-over and it's as good as the day it was made in 1977! Apparently it was used by an old guy who fished the Mississippi river - nice bit of provenance there! Came complete with the original manual, FCC CB rules and licence application form.
Some Eastern EU stations heard over the last few days. I'll wire an old Astatic 575-M6 Teardrop mic to it soon to see if I can make it into a bit of a big talker!
Let me know if anyone wants to try an AM QSO - I'm in N. Somerset, so most of south 163 Div is within range.
Not the actual radio, but mine looks exactly the same.
Cheers
Gary

Re: Blast from the past - AM rig
Wired up the Astatic mic last night and it's sounding good.
Let me know when you've sorted a vertical out and we'll give it a go. There's a few FB stations within range so maybe a little AM net will develop.
Cheers

Re: Blast from the past - AM rig
Excellent looking radio, it looks like new too, AM is an excellent band to use especially on quality gear.
I love the old classic original CB equipment. You have got me thinking about what I could buy now, there is some nice stuff floating around and some lovely homebase sets.
I have just re-bought for keep sake my first CB radio which I had in the 1980s, not the same actual radio of course!, its a little 27/81 Commtron CB40f, £9.99 on ebay!
Imagine if AM CB Radio took off big time again!!

Re: Blast from the past - AM rig
This is the actual chicken box shack - Royce on the top and it's UK Harvard cousin on the bottom.
For SSB, I've two Stalker 9 radios, a President McKinley and a Superstar 3900 (for the zeros). Contacts all over the place this year with the Stalkers - I love using the old kit!
Good luck looking for homebases Patrick!
Cheers

Re: Blast from the past - AM rig
You are right about the kids not liking radio. I got my lad sitting next to me one afternoon writing down callsigns and signals to try and get him interested.
After half an hour and about a dozen logs he said its just a load of boring old blokes talking about rubbish !
Well you can't win them all !

Re: Blast from the past - AM rig
Hi,
AM is ok, we have several activations day for that and its nice mod if there is not much qrn. I have cb friend who have zodiag saturnus and apollo, nice rigs, used 25 y ago one of them and it was and are good rigs. Also meny mocoma radios are on now adays, those are cybertech (or something like that) based radios and give super modulations. Some older base radio are hard to find and same models what u have there (am only)
(nd about kids today, your right, but one trick is good to do, when age is 9to11 give radio to kid and his/hers friend. After that it can give a spark to cb/ham and if they are older whit a car, put it in a car and they find it self away . Also this hobby take time out from kids if dady/mom use radio and its competition of collective time together, like child can feel it.
There is good radios on used marked place in uk area, here all good one go outright from hands. Hard to find classic radios, (cost 50-300euro)
