Hello,

Iam from the West part of germany, and we also dont understand the dialect from the people from the north part. Plattdeutsch is very hard to understand emoticon

Hallo!

I was in Germany in 1979 as a student wishing to learn more about Germany and enjoying the extremely kind company of the people I met and stayed with.

I was outside with the father of the family I was staying with. They were both going on and on in Platt and while I spoke a good bit of Hoch Deutsch and some Dutch (Nederlands), I could only understand about 20% of what they were saying. I was kind and nodded and smiled alot. They probably thought I was an idiot. : )

When we came inside, I asked the father about their conversation and he laughed a lot! After that, he taught me this:

"Ik kann kaynn Platt" (" I can't speak PlattDeutsch")

THAT, is the complete extent of my Platt. : )
