Re: starting again
Hi paul.ill can work the peaks using 5-10 watts from my hill top in stoke on trent(between manc and brum)and am always out so ill send you my number via private message or what pm stands for on run board mate.i generally cut it with 100 watts but my amp will do around 350ish.when skip/prop is on,youll make european dx easy using 20 watts(barefoot).
a mag mounted in the middle of roof will give your radiated pattern a more rounded all directional shape, than will any other mounting point on your car/van.although drilling your whip in the middle is miles better again.
too much amp power and a mag mount is often an audio disaster because of an effect called ground looping(feedback)
dont drive a small 100 watt amp with 20 watts cause itll wreck it.look for around 5-10 watts in plenty.
when using your silver rod.various reports say it can nearly be used on the deck but id try to get it up 20 foot on a metal pole.this will help the feedpoint resonaance and losses of signal to ground.
Height is not really a consideration of dx because your signal propogates(bounces)back to earth from an ionised layer in the atmosphere when dxing but it is essentiall in line of sight contacts ie fm and simply ssb to ssb contacts i.e me to you.however.height is major advantage in getting away from noise and so youll hear everything from anywhere.
best thing to do when looking for a good dx spot is to find one without noise, and for dxing have a good "take off " i.e 2000 ft but flat for miles may seem good but 700 ft with a sheer drop to the sea is better.and see hills to rear as an advantage e.g when im dx ing to the west,i position a hill behind me to block incoming noise from the east and so on.
