Not for 30 years!!
Hi Guys
Its been 30 years since I hung up my antenna. Having been a SSB DXer in the late 70's, FM killed it for me. I have never thought of taking it up again until now.
I gather you need to register to get a username. Please could someone give me a brief what to do?
When I finished I had a Cobra GTL with a 6' Firestik (which I still have) & mag mount. Early in 1980 I talked to guy in California from Southern England and went to visit him when I was over there later that year. He then was running 100w, and couldn't believe we were running a fraction of that here. Good sun spot.
In my early twenties then, they were great years, probably more so because it was somewhat illegal. We even had a guy who had a CB on his push bike with a small lead acid battery. He used to put the mag on anything metal. Usually a car in a car park!
It seems that the problem is still interference using SSB. Presumably a decent aerial tuned properly is okay? We used to have car CB aerial that looked like regular aerials. Are these still available? Do people use these or just not worry about a mag?
I was interested to see another posting on the prospect of getting a "pull". Seems not too much of a problem if you don't cause a problem?
I see that some suppliers sell "multiband" sets for "EU" use. Is that what people are mainly using now? ie switch to FM if anyone is looking?
Pete

Hi Pete and welcome to FB's. If you go to the home page and click the MEMBERSHIP button, fill in a few details and Dave will get back to you with your number. There are loads of us on here that were on in the 70s/80s, me included! Dont seem to worry about a pull these days, not like back then so enjoy! Not sure where you are from so maybe catch you on the radio one day.

Re: Not for 30 years!!
Nice to have you here!
reading your 1`st post nearly made me spit my beer all over the desk!
I used to have a Honda 90 Moped back in 84, with a rig in the back-box and a spare 6V bike battery that I had wired to the bikes own 6v, to make 12v to run the set.
and a little DV27 on the box top.
to avoid rattling and stuff getting bashed about I packed the box with newspaper, it worked great!
I rode past the local park on a lovely autumn afternoon and passed my mate, he was waving at me, things couldn`t have been cooler, but he was SO HAPPY to have seen me, he was waving and running after me too, "do I speed up and vanish, or do I slow down and let him try catch me up and then speed off, Hmmm...."
then a car flashed me!???
yeah, the Back bloody box was on fire wasn`t it!
me and a smoke trail... DOH!

Re: Not for 30 years!!
I've got a lot more stories to bore you all!
In the 70's it was very dodgy really. Radios were generally on slide mounts so that they could be pulled out and pushed under the car seat. That's how bad it was. People really were concerned with prosecution, which was why I was asking about it earlier.
Most cars had aerials that looked the same as a regular aerial. In fact many people just used a regular aerial with a Pl259 and hoped for the best with the loading.
We had a guy with a moped who connected to a a piece of drain pipe at the town hall if you don't mind. He used loading coils to stop the output transistors frying.
It was a great time; Hope its less stressful this time round.

Re: Not for 30 years!!
Not meaning to hijack your thread, but I'm new here too and its been 30 years since I was last 'on the air'
I might still have my President McKinley 120ch with K40 mic and antenna, at least it should be knocking around in the roof space!
When I get time I'm gonna have a good hunt for it.
I'll be having a good look around here aswell, but can anyone quickly point me in the direction of a good base antenna or directions to make one??
Do we still have to get a CB license ?
Cheers

Re: Not for 30 years!!
Glad to see that there are some old timers left! CB licence has ceased. Are you going legal?
