Active today

I'm spending the weekend on my narrowboat and I'll be active from somewhere on the Shropshire Union canal later this afternoon. Sirio 4000 mag mount on the roof. So give us a shout if you hear me, works really well and I'm hoping for some skip like yesterday afternoon to fully test the set up whilst on the boat emoticon

Good and bad reports.

Bad thing was I had a problem using the amp. For some reason the amp needs 13v+, 12v is not good enough to drive it properly. Although I have nine 110amp commercial vehicle batteries on board, they only sit at 12.1v 99% of the time. The only time their voltage is higher is whilst charging or immediately afterwards. And the amp didnt like it. The radio didnt like it much either

But the good thing was that stations from Spain and France could hear me, even if it was to give me a bad audio report. Thats from a Sirio 4000 mag mounted on the roof of my narrowboat somewhere on the SU canal, only a feet above ground level.

Odd though it may be, the best way to get over the problem is to either have the engine running. Not something I want to have to do each time I use the radio. Or use a 13.8v power supply from 240ac! I have 240ac ring mains on the boat supplied from two 2000w inverters. I'll have to go from 12v dc to 240ac to 13.8v dc, daft but it will work. Expensive on electric though, as each peice of kit will only be 90% effecient. emoticon
