ive just tryed setting up my rig tristar 747 and im getting no reading from the swr meter also the needle doesnt go up on the rig when i transmit.

it is transmitting on fm as ive tested it but cant get any life from the needle or the swr meter?? seems to recieve ok aswell.

all the leads and the swr meter are ok as ive been using them on a fm rig with no probs.

First off the needle will only move on SSB when you talk, but will move on FM just by keying. What meter do you have?

Have you set the meter to set or calibrate, then turn the knob when transmitting, does the needle move then?

Make sure the switch is on FWD or Cal, depending on meter, but not on Ref.

Check your patch lead for continuity as well in case theres a short.

thanks for the reply.

my swr meter is a midland model swr-25.

it only has fwd and ref.

it doesnt move on fm/am/ssb on the tristar but works fine on a 27/81 rig ive got.

the needle on the rig wont move on either band.

Before we through our hands in the air emoticon

Is there anywhere on the rig to adjust power output?

When you say you've tested the radio, how?

Re: no swr reading

ive tested it using a fm rig and a am rig set up in a shed outside and the 747 is indoors only about 15ish meters between the antennas.

its got a dx/loc switch on the front but doesnt seem to make any change, but then my 2 set ups are very close. getting +30 both ways but then they ar close lol.

ive got a small burner should i try that inline.....would that work if its not putting out much power?

 thanks for your help!

I suggest you widen the gap to a mile or so, sounds like the radio may only be putting out very low power, say 1w. This might not be enough for the swr metre but will still work if you're very close.

Or the power from the radio is too much for the meter?, But I doubt that emoticon

Have you tried whistling on SSB, sounds daft but the power out of the radio should be higher on SSB and whistling will provide the carrier and should peak it emoticon

Oh I've just thought have you tried both radio/meter on the same antenna?

Re: no swr reading

tried every way emoticon

just for a experiment i took a fm rig indoors with the 747. powered up the fm with no antenna and its getting 3 on the meter, but if i key up for ages the swr meter is now moving but not much and the light on the fm rig goes from 3 to 5 takes about 10 seconds for this to happen.

so you guys reckon its nakerd then?

 no power coming out?

would the burner not boost the signal to a useable level?

Try it, cant hurt. As long as the aerials swr is set low with the other radio emoticon

I'm afraid the radios output final transistors might be shot. This happens when a radio is used without a properly tuned aerial emoticon

I have no idea whether the parts for these are readily available, they should be, then send it off for a repair quote. Whilst they got it they can check it all out tune it up a bit for you emoticon

if it was me i wouldnt bother with a cybernet board SSB radio(ham international, tristar, superstar 2000 etc)keep your eyes open for a uniden board radio or simular(cobra/stalker/president etc)they have much more powerfull audio on tx than those cybernet ones. in my experiance all the ones i have owned have been a bit shite so i have stuck with the latter. just my opinion and experiance with these radios
