.

(Later Edit) ... Great minds think alike .... While I was working on this post, Andy posted his response - how coincidental or 'Spooky' !!).

I reckon those recent sightings in the Midlands of the Aurora Borealis (Sp?) - (or 'Northern Lights' for the educationally challenged), may well be the ionisation of the upper atmosphere (or even the 'F' Layer) caused by the output from Johns 'Boots' !!!

I took a photo last week, John - so, come clean - Is it you ??

And not forgetting the ground mounted loop which started to steam the grass, remember that one John! there are circles all over the Cotswolds now where the firmament has melted and turned to brass under that antenna!

ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA
the bigger the higher the better
then feed it with the most cleanest power you can get away with .
failing that 100watts into a 5/8 vertical will get you most places but slower ?? emoticon emoticon

Re: Power requirements for dxing

Thanks Hot Fusion,
Great advice. Answered a lot of my questions as well. I am using both Yaesu FT707 and DX5000 radios and both seem adequate but could be more powerful. Was going down amplifier route but will now change to low loss coax and get aerial up higher.
Is there another calling frequency for USB ? Used 27.5550 but so much traffic.
Many thanks
Regards

You could try 26.285MHz USB, it's been a good alternative in the past when 27.555MHz gets a bit mental.

Re: Power requirements for dxing

My Anytone only puts out 40w FM, 33w SSB and 12w AM. I've worked Canada, North and South America and most of Europe no problem when the prop is good.

I've had some good ground wave contacts into Dorest, Devon, Somerset, South/North Wales and Cumbria and North Yorkshire. I'm located in Buxton, North Derbyshire.

As has already been said, the Antenna and height makes the difference.

I am using a ss6900 with an a99 about 40ft in the air bulk standard pushing about 21w and have got all over europe with it no problem. Get your antenna up as high as you can. Ps I am in a fairly high location

And nothing quite beats the frustration of spending ages returning calls to someone calling, only for them not to hear you! emoticon
