Yeticom Optima

,

OK !! There is a superb review on Transmission 1's site on the Optima - about the size of a small novel, and because of this, plus the manufacturers specs - I decided to splash my Pensioners Pennies and bought a new one for £220 from RadioZing.

The review is here.........

]YETICOM OPTIMA REVIEW

After a couple of days use, I have nothing really to add, except it outperformed my Yaesu FT-767GX and my Magnum Delta Force on 'Receive' - using instant comparisons with a 3-way antenna switch. I could hear stations on T5 that on the other two were lost in the 'mush'.

Gosh! - I was really surprised how small it was! - the fascia measures a mere 6 inches by 2 inches. Other items of note... 1. FM Audio is down - if you are determined to talk to the Muppets, you need a Power Mic - wired as per ICOM. 2. There is no SWR Meter - Essential to get a good SWR / Power Meter. 3. The dial (bright white light) has no dimmer. 4. The rubber knobs have a 'murky silver' position pointer painted on them, it is hard to see in low light - especially when being dazzled by the screen. 5. You get no User Manual' (I guess this is due to the fact that they are only manufactured in small batches, but even a Photocopied set of instructions would be good!). Fortunately the Manual is easy to find on the Interweb !! (No ink in my printer though!).

Hey! - Nothing is perfect in this world, and these were just minor niggles. For me the radio is the best on the current market, and will still be around when others bite the dust. A future 'Classic'.

The only 'Plus' I can add over and above the praise heaped on it in the excellent review, is that it is quoted as producing 50 Watts of RF on FM and SSB - in fact where my antenna has its lowest SWR it is radiating about 56 Watts.

I clearly heard this afternoon 1200 - 1700 UTC (Thurs) [sign in to see URL] more than 13 Countries, and I worked 7 of them - best 'bag' in the last 10 years for me !!

Happy Hunting es Gd DX, de 26FB89

The Delta Force is already 'chopped' - sold on Ebay for £160, and went to Skegness for its holidays!! The new owner is really pleased with it, so everyone is happy.

Sadly - Skip is so variable these last few days, that some times I hear absolutely nothing during my short monitoring periods, and at other times it booms in - I think I work a fair share of those I hear, and always get a fair report.

Another point on the Optima, I have found, is that the 'miniscule' (small !!) mic supplied with the rig, has to be held close to the mouth to get full modulation on SSB, and it is also 'back of the box' on reports on FM. I therefore think that a powered Electret Mic, with up/down and variable amp would be useful. It has to be ICOM wired - but I am fairly cash strapped at the moment for the expensive suitable ones I see advertised.

Re: Yeticom Optima

I am waiting for delivery on my Optima. In reference to a better microphone, allow me to share information I received from another Optima owner on another forum.

"You have made an excellent choice; the OPTIMA is a great rig. You may want to consider a new mic for the radio: the "]ICOM HM-36. This mic is available for about half-price at: "]Radio-Mart. It has higher output than the stock mic, and has a better frequency response. I get great reports with it. (You may have to roll back the mic gain, it has such high output!)"

This mic is the one made in Japan, which allegedly is much better than the newer ones from China. I bought one from this vendor and received it already. I was told this vendor's inventory on this mic is low... so jump on this before they run out.

I hope this helps.

Hi Filmoreranger ....

I have just ordered one of these mics from Martyn at Radio Mart. 40 Dollars (Reduced from 96!) plus [sign in to see URL] Shipping - [sign in to see URL] in total - or 32 GB Pounds. Very Cheap for a Japanese made Icom Microphone!!

Thank you so very much for the info! Its skint my Old Farts Pension Money this week, so if its no good, I will blame you!!! LOL

I am already getting great reports from stations worldwide (when the bands are open!), and have just had a QSO with a 'Dave' in Telford, about 40 miles away, who says my Audio sounds great, so this may really punch up my signal !! That was on SSB, but he couldn't hear me on FM or AM !!! - 5 by 9 on SSB.

Finally - I hope you now have your 'Optima' and are suitably impressed, and wish you many happy hours of DXing with it ..... The burning question..... Does the mic plug need re-wiring, or is it 'Plug and Play' ????

Kind thoughts and 73's de 26FM089

Terence the Terrible !!

Re: Yeticom Optima

Thanks!

I just received my Optima today. I am working with some "subject matter experts" to properly install the transceiver in my truck early next week. I am quite impressed with the size of the unit. I thought it was going to be larger in size (Smaller is good).

Glad to hear you ordered your new microphone. I was told it is a plug-n-play replacement... no re-wiring needed. That along with the kudos on how well it worked on the Optima is why I jumped and ordered one myself.

Sitting here, totally awestruck !! The Icom HM-36 Mic arrived here this morning (Tuesday)from USA, and I had only ordered it last Friday !! This is definitely the 'Japanese' model of the microphone (and the better one !).... Without me asking, the nice man at Radio Mart in Kentucky, stated on the Customs label that it cost [sign in to see URL] Dollars, so there was no duty to pay in UK !!

Just plugged it in to the Optima, and 'Yay !!'.... The plug is wired as standard to work the Optima. And is quite a bit bigger than the very small Optima Mic.

The mic is an amazing match to the Optima - contacts in the past - especially on FM, had said that my Audio was a bit 'Back of the Box', and this is also mentioned in several reviews. Also - when on sideband, I had the mic gain turned up to 'max' and had to speak close to the mic to get the full 50 Watts deflection on a Meter. With this mic, I have had to turn down my Audio gain from 'Full' at 5 O'Clock, to about 1 O'Clock, and can have the mic a few inches from my mouth !!

Great review!
I must say that your SSB audio is excellent as we have spoken.
I have the K-PO DX 5000 and, it's OK but not as good as a Cobra 148 on receive. I'm going to instll it in my car and leave it there.
