For anyone interested who hasn't seen it, have a look on youtube. Mad buggers!!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Hot Fusion)Thu, 25 Jun 2015 16:58:38 +0000 Re: 12 volt '1200 watt' amplifier...https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p26736,from=rss#post26736https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p26736,from=rss#post26736Alternators charge at around 14.2V although battery voltage is typically 13.8V. Using that by 1200W you come up with 170A based on the amp being 50% efficient which I think is normal for amplifiers run in class-AB for SSB use. Now, this is peak amps and not average. If you're not talking into the mic there's virtually zero current draw. 170A is peak but probably half that for average current draw and most modern vehicles can cope with that although I'd still suggest upgrading to a higher output alternator and higher capacity battery just to be on the safe side. The superbowl guys in the US have been mentioned above. Most run Leece Neville 200A alternators all wired in parallel as these offer the best bang for the buck however the guys that run valve amps in the 'unlimited AC' class in competition run 350 Amp Electrodyne alternators (www.electrodyne.com) - up to 8 which in normal service are used in locomotives! Trains to you and me. I forgot to add, many DC operator use DC to DC converters or variable voltage regulators to 'over volt' the 12V Toshiba 2SC2879 transistors. These devices are rated at 100-120W pep but at 18-20V you can get a very dirty 200W+ out of them for the 10 seconds that these guys are on the line. Biggest DC amp I've seen has 128 transistors. I have a photo on the PC somewhere. 10kw is flee power in their unlimited DC class (solid-state amps) with unlimited numbers of alternators. Up to 30kw is run. Unlimited AC (with valves) have several guys running 100kw+ with a pair of 4CX25K valves in the final PA. Video cameras stop working and the birds drop out of the trees. I = W/V = 1200 OVER 12 = 100? or am i missing something? lolnondisclosed_email@example.com (26fb010)Sat, 01 Dec 2012 21:42:02 +0000 Re: 12 volt '1200 watt' amplifier...https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p19003,from=rss#post19003https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p19003,from=rss#post19003A Wilson takes 5kw according to the manufacturer. And I once saw a valve linear, Yaesu, that was 1200w cw 12v mobile! On Ebay UK I'll have a search for the details, must be somewhere Also in the states the superbowl guys and key down yobs have massive 10kw plus mobile amps with 2-3 alternators and massive battery banks, hell they have 2kw driving amps Madnondisclosed_email@example.com (yamanx1)Thu, 25 Aug 2011 19:10:49 +0000 Re: 12 volt '1200 watt' amplifier...https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p19001,from=rss#post19001https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p19001,from=rss#post19001Agreed - you'd be hard pushed to find a mobile antenna capable of taking that kind of power too. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Hot Fusion)Thu, 25 Aug 2011 18:21:10 +0000 Re: 12 volt '1200 watt' amplifier...https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p18981,from=rss#post18981https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p18981,from=rss#post18981500 quid it went for?? i would of rather spent a couple more for a decent 240v one. i mean who will use it mobile at 200amp?? unless they drove a electric forklift i supose nondisclosed_email@example.com (topbuzzuk)Wed, 24 Aug 2011 06:59:21 +0000 Re: 12 volt '1200 watt' amplifier...https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p18966,from=rss#post18966https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p18966,from=rss#post18966If it really can output 1200 watts, assuming 50 % efficiency that would be 200 amps current draw - similar to a starter motor. I see it has 8 output devices and some pretty spindly wiring - personally I can't see it actually outputting this kind of power without self-destructing. Now, if it was made to operate from 48 volts or so, I could be persuaded to believe it.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Hot Fusion)Mon, 22 Aug 2011 20:26:44 +0000 Re: 12 volt '1200 watt' amplifier...https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p18965,from=rss#post18965https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p18965,from=rss#post18965I seen this, fancied having a go with it but wonders how long battery would last on full power, not long I bet Alnondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaosss)Sun, 21 Aug 2011 22:36:44 +0000 12 volt '1200 watt' amplifier...https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p18962,from=rss#post18962https://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/p18962,from=rss#post18962Item number 320744962188 Is this any of you?
