posticon Keep yer pecker up!

Not having any propagation for weeks and weeks can really be a bummer. Particularly if you've just got yourself into radio, or back into it for that matter.

CB or 11m freebanding was undergoing a bit of a renaiscance, but these barron conditions have not helped. Even the message boards go quiet

Remember the days when there was loads of stations from the USA, Canada etc.? Well they will be back, dont lose heart. emoticon

It must be doubly difficult if you have an 11m radio, and you live in an area where there are hardly any CBer's, let alone skip conditions. All the equipment and no-one to talk to, even to listen to! emoticon

It would be easy to throw it back in the cupboard, stick it on Ebay and going back to playing golf, or something else, "forget about radio, its dead anyway."

Well it is pretty dead right now, but we're going through the very bottom of the cycle, things can only get better from now on. It wont be long before you start hearing the summer sporadic conditions that wont be consistant, but we will have our radios to play with again on 11m emoticon And between now and then patience is the name of the game.

Also there are lots of really great radios on Ebay right now that can be snapped up at a bargain, from those not willing to wait a wee while longer emoticon

yes, i am doing my best to "convert" some who i know to get cbs and start talking to each other,[managed about 4 so far and have even supplied a cb and antenna for a land rover] there are a few in my area but not enough to get a decent network going for more than a short while, after going on about how my radio could [possibly] communicate with others a long long way away my freinds had a right good laugh last saturday when the net result of my set up was a pair of tractor drivers discussing crops ect a few miles away!, anyway i will keep my pecker up and hope that some decent skip comes my way so my newest and most exiting investment works for me, i do remember back in the day that a proper qsl with a distant station was a rare thing, if not i will continue to use this method--works 100% and is really cheap! . happy easter to you all, unclejessie.

I reckon low skip activity can be a good thing - it allows the hilltop DXers to work with a channel completely clear of any foreign intrusion, and I find a delight in speaking to another UK station who is only just audible above the noise. Ground-wave isn't all bad!

Of course, it's nice to speak to someone in Perth too, but as I see it, the two sides of the band have different attractions.

I just wish there were a few other like-minded people out there to make a contact more likely, as sitting on a hilltop near Dartmoor can be a lonely passtime.

Anyhow, the kids have been introduced to CD via some handhelds - it's surprising how the youth of today seem to know nothing of CB. The simplex mode of transmission seems to make it even more attractive, and differentiates it from, say, a mobile phone.
