Hi from Devon, South West UK.
Hi all - Andy from Devon logging in.
I haven't been transmitting on SSB on any band for many years now, but have recently started digging out the old gear and giving it a dust-off. I notice the old Ham International Multimode II no longer has audio although it transmits fine.
I used to operate on 11, and have had attempts at 6.6 using a home made valve transverter, which took SSB from an 11 metre rig and by mixing it with a 21MHz signal was able to output a few watts at the appropriate frequency via a TV line output valve. It was horrendously unstable though and would often break into unwanted oscillation. I never quite got to the bottom of the problem, but almost certainly due to insufficient screening somewhere.
That'll do for now, but pleased to be a member of the group - just want an FB callsign now.

Re: Hi from Devon, South West UK.
Oh yes!
I prefer working with valves - so much more predictable as they don't suddenly fail due to overload. You can hear the anode ticking as it expands, then glows red... plenty of time to hit the power switch. I'll see if can yank the 'device' down out of the loft to photograph what's left - I'm sure you'd like a laugh! Extremely primitive is probably a good description...

Re: Hi from Devon, South West UK.
Thanks Keith.
Contacting the midlands from Devon is a bit of a haul, but I have done it before from a high spot, and with the help (presumably) of a bit of tropspheric ducting, so we may yet speak!
I used to be heavily into hilltop ground wave DXing years ago and used to regularly take part in these 'linkups'. Now while the sunspots are asleep is a great time for me to resurrect an old passion. Just depends on whether there's abyone else out there, as the last time I listened, about midnight on a Saturday, there was zilcho going on.
Maybe members of this forum (those interested in this particular sport) could agree a date, time windo and frequency (555?) and see what happens?
