Anytone at 5555 V5 Short review.
A short review of the recent 'wonder rig'
I bought mine online from Nevada Radio. Ordered Wednesday morning, it arrived Thursday moring along with the Programming Lead and Software CD.
First appearances was, this is big rig physically, much bigger than standard 40 channel rigs yet opening it up one has to wonder why, as it could have been made much smaller.
Plugged straight in and SWR'd in on my ancient but well loved Cherokee 11m mobile antenna. She showed 2.5 on the 28 Metre band (Im a G6 so can legally use the 10M Band) Quiet, but a few distant UA CQ calls on USB.
Installed the Programming CD on my laptop,
Downloaded the ukeuhi10mv5.rar Dat files from http://highfields-arc.co.uk/repairs/at5555datsv5.htm, opened the rig up and connected the USB lead to the rig and laptop and waited. I could see the laptop trying to install the drivers untill I get a message about having to download a further file = "Prolific Driver Installer". I downloaded and installed that and the laptop immediately found the correct port for the Software programme and I loaded the Dat file up into the Rig. A quick switch on of the unit showed it had indeed installed all the UK and EU Frequencies along with the 10M Band. Just a point but I found later that you have to use the same USB socket on your machine as its a pain trying to get another port recognised.
I fitted the rig into my vehicles and began listening on the UK and EU FM channels and the Olga's and Russian taxis were booming in.
A check on the SWR showed 1.1_1.2 on all UK and EU channels. By now the skip had dropped down somewhat so was unable to transmit or listen further.
Problems.
This particular rig had a problem with the channel change knob. On any channel if you even gently touched the knob it would jump up or down a channel which was a real pain when mobile. Another curious thing, which I even have with my exchange unit is with the Squelch. When mobile, if the squelch opened and you reached down to turn it up it would close, when removing your hand from around 6 inches or so away it would open again !! When doing this you could also see the 'SRF' meter moving down as your hand gets closer then going up a little as you move it away.
Once Ive had it on the air for a bit, I'll report back with QSO reports

Re: Anytone at 5555 V5 Short review.
I have the same radio and im not impressed to be honest, mine hasnt the problems yours has but it feels cheap and doesnt receive any way as well as my superstar 3900el.
I also have a couple of hf radios so comparing them to it would be unfair.

Re: Anytone at 5555 V5 Short review.
Well mine's behaving quite well, had several chats with locals on 10M with good reports both ways.
Having already had one rig stolen from my camper Im loath to put anything more expensive in and the Anytone, for its price is quite good value.

i even tryed to contact soontone/anytone but they weren't interested in support.I got my two radios direct from them.
It is about time those Wouxun dual banders came out. They were supposed to come out about two years ago.!!

Re: Anytone at 5555 V5 Short review.
does what it says on the tin - yes its big - (but as a partially sighted person i like this ) and it lights up nice in low light conditions - again from MY pov a bonus
not had any issues with mine ONCE i had it set up as i liked it ( ergo i read the handbook to figure out the function button )
not had a play with the programming - as it seems to have all the frequencies that i needed already in it - but may do so in time just to make them a little more logical
all in all ?? as i say does the job - its NOT up there with an amateur rig - but for the money ???? - i have seen worse
will give it a 7.5 /10

Re: Anytone at 5555 V5 Short review.
I run a V3 (older than the V5 thread topic I know, but pretty much the same.....) alongside a new Kenwood TS480 and to be honest, the Anytone (well, KPO-DX5000 in this case) makes a better job, at least of the frequencies within its capabilities. For a radio that was about 1/4 the price of the Kenwood (now even lower), it makes a better job of receiving, and the audio is a lot clearer thanks to a big internal speaker. The TS480 meanwhile has a tiny, tinny speaker.
No faults with this one, and loads of folk over on the Transmission 1 forum raving about them too.
Squelch doing funny things when you put your hand near it sounds like some kind of grounding issue.
Someone on Transmission 1 is now reporting you can have V3 versions of these sets for £115 posted. Superb value for money.
Mine is used almost all the time these days for 27 MHz. Not had the 480 on for a while, but must do so to stop it seizing up!

Re: Anytone at 5555 V5 Short review.
I've had my Anytone 555 V5 since Feb of this year and I find it to be a good radio. The RX is great and my only criticism would be that the audio on TX is a tad quite on DX. Hopefully to be rectified with a power mic.
But in general I get good reports on both ground wave and propagation.
I've worked Southern England and south Wales on ground wave from Buxton. I've also worked North and South America and most of Europe static-mobile with my Sirio 4000.
I bought mine from Def Scan already preprogrammed (option 6 iirc) for £145. It's the only radio I've owned since coming back, so I've nothing to compare it to. But from my limited experience it seems to work.
