When current only flows on the surface you realize what a waste an solid copper earth rod is. More surface area on a copper tube.

If you’ve got sandy-ish soil you can sink a copper pipe with the ‘jetting’ method - basically attach a hose to the top of the pipe and use the water flow to flush the soil out of the way, making it relatively easy to push the pipe down through the soil.
A standard 3m length of 15mm copper pipe is probably cheaper than an earth rod.
I used 22mm copper pipe, a bodge job adaptor to attach the hose pipe, a blow torch to solder the connections between the lengths of pipe, and very quickly got down beyond 6 metres to where I hit clay, and stopped.
Is it any use? Good question, but it’s there and it’s connected to one side of my balun fed long wire, which works OK, so I suppose it is!!
Cheers
Chris

I bought a 4 foot earth rod from 'screwfix' (UK) for £[sign in to see URL].
It has cured 90% of my new RF issues I have had with new Moxon antenna.
