Re: whats better ft897 or ft100d???

two people i know have had nothing but bother with ft100d's - i would avoid.
FT897, i would have had opne of those - i like the idea of having the option to go mobile, base or portable all in one rig. shame icom didnt pick up the baton and run with it on that one.

i like the look of the 897, but another thing is that i'm not too confident about widebanding a radio, unless it was easy.

Trying to "open up" one of these small compact radios is not a job for the faint hearted. It may they can be done by altering the software, but if they need diodes removing etc. Let the shop do it emoticon

Modded the FT450 but you need take all cases off, then take the front off, then some panel behind the front and then remove a diode the size of nothing..

If you can mod these new ones, then you can be a surgeon at a hospital, make no mistake there

TX range expansion on HF, VHF and UHF is very simple. When modified the radio will also transmit AM mode in the aircraft band with approximately 1 watt at 118 MHz to about 17 watts am carrier at 136 MHz.

On MAIN BOARD under speaker near Xtal you can see two rows of solder dots for SMD components. Only on position 10 (from left) is diode (D2030), which is necessary to remove.

Thats all.

After connecting power radio will be reseted and TX range is expanded.

Thats for the 706 IIg
