new to the hobby

Hello,

I've been interested in freebanding and EC for a long time and have finally decided to dive in. I came across this group while surfing looking for freeband related sites.

I live in the California high desert close to Death Valley. I started out in the late 1970's as an AM CB op and an SWL enthusiast. I still have all of my orignal radios, one of which is a tube type 23 channel AM rig.

I have a few questions on getting started:

-How do I go about obtaining a call sign?

-What are the more popular 27MHz frequencies (or frequency ranges) to operate within? (I am aware of the 27.555 USB calling frequency)

-Are there nets that meet on specific frequencies on a scheduled basis?

-Any other advice would be greatly appreciated as well.

I hope to be on the air soon.

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks for the welcome from both of my posts. I've been an RF addict for a long time too.

What kind of equipment have you progressed through through the years?

NA in here strong right now, so if you're by the 11m band today or over the weekend, I will usually qsy 27530, if busy 27460 or somewhere in between :0

Hope to work you soon.

I will need to open up my transceiver first, it is a Kenwood TS-870s and I believe the mod is pretty straightforward. I'm a ham and just a couple of countries away from my first DXCC, so I am a bit apprehensive about breaking my best radio right now!

I do have an old TS-830s which I can use at the very top of 11M from about 27.960 to 27.999. Can you tune up in your antenna in that frequency range?

Yes, no worries, I can use ham bands as well emoticon

I have the TS870 and it is straight forward mod emoticon

If you like go onto the cluster part of the main site tomorrow, I'll meet you wherever emoticon but 11m is best for me aerial wise, say 27990 if you like emoticon

Excellent! My wife wants me to take her up to Yosemite park this weekend so I may not be around to get onthe radio. I'll let you know.

I printed out that mod and filed it in my users manual a couple of years ago. Does it apply to all versions (i.e. serial number ranges) and firmware versions? I don't want to do the reset and have the radio go brain dead on me...
