Earthing The Shack...

Hi [sign in to see URL] there any rules to earthing the radios, atu etc in the shack ???

How long can the earth wire be ,or is it not good to have it too long , basically my shack is on the top floor of a 2 story house (box room stolen for myself) so its a fair old drop to the ground outside, am i able to to set up an earth bar in the shack , attach whatever needs earthing then have the drop of earth cable all the way to the ground and then to an earth rod???

cant for life of me remember if someone said a long long time ago that a long shack earthing cable was bad new???

Any help would be much appreciated..

cheers Paul.

Hi.

As far as i recollect, to install an rf earth, you need to find out if you have PME (protective multiple earthing) if so you would be safer to bond the RF earth to the PME bonding point which is safer if there is a fault/failure in the neutral conductor in the main supply.

PME= all metal surfaces, radiators and pipes are bonded together at the main supply unit.

hope this helps

Thanks for the info, if i understand you correctly ,your saying earth out my shack to the radiator which should inturn be earthed , alas we live in a new house ,a new build which has plastic pipes which i can only presume wont be connected together on an earth loop so to speak..

If ive got it wrong i may need a little more help!!!

cheers Paul.

Hi Paul

Do you have any metal water pipes or radiators with tags and a yellow earth wire conected or even a stainless steel sink. new builds generally have a PME system.

If you don't see any earth wire tagged to these items then an RF earth straight to a ground spike would do (they say the shorter the better)but you can only do what you can do.

If there is any wiring conected then you would still use the ground spike method but you would also have to bond(connect) the ground spike to the main electrical earthing point used in the house which would be better done by a professional.... If In Doubt contact your local electrical supplier they should be able to assure you the system you have and what you would need.... Its very unwise to risk your radio gear or even worse your life on the advice i have tried to give.

Even if you understand a bit better still give thm a ring, ask for advice on RF earthing on your property

hope this explination isn't too long winded

Rab

Cheers Rab, sorry for the slow reply, busy as ever!!

Ive had a good look round but dont see any earthing points on any pipework etc , But directly below the shack window ,all be it some 30/35ft is the electric meter box which has an earth bonding strap in it , if ive read your post right, i get another earth spike , hammer that into the ground, and connect the shack and the earth in the electric box together and fingers crossed i should be doing well? .

Hi mate

If that box is the main entry point for power into your property then RF earth from shack to ground spike and then a cable from your mains earth to same ground spike. But remember safety always comes first, as i said before don't take chances with your equipment or worse your life, all can be verified by a simple phone call, you don't need to tell them you intend doing this just that you were thinking about it. emoticon
