well i finally took the optima out today, all be it very tempory, chucked a magmount on the roof of the van and plugged the radio into the ciggy lighter socket, no amp or pre amp at all , just the bare radio straight out the back... Bloody hell its brilliant, 1st off, i got a few radio checks off a few lads around the country , Walsall, Telford , Glamorgan, and Manchester , all came back with great reports with audio being excellent.. Had a flit around the frequencies and could hear loads of uk cb coming through, thought it was dead on there now, deffo busy today!! then back to the 555 for a bit of dx, i heard a guy from Trinidad (dont remember the call sign, its written down in the van) guys name was Watson, 1st call back to him and i was in straight away , signal 4 radio 5 right out the back of the radio, cant fault that in any way shape or form... Needless to say im well happy with the Optima , its so nice knowing its new , untouched and working very well... im a happy chap now so much so i may get another for the car..If anyone is thinking of getting one , just get it , you wont be let down !!!! ... Now for the forthcoming Icom, fingers crossed its a goodun!!!

Nice contact with Watson, also spoke with him today, had a long chat about snow of all things lol. 158AT113 is his call and at one point he was the only station I could hear on 11m.
Was very quiet today so you did well

yes , agreed the band/prop was pretty terrible but Watson was blasting through, he said his mate was operating on another frequency but i couldnt hear him but i was happy with getting through to Watson all the same, and happy knowing the Optima was doing the job, ive got a small amp/pre-amp (100 watts) to go with it but ill have to regulate the power before i connect it all up, i dont think putting 50 watts into a 100 watt amp will do it any good, maybe around 10 watts in will do!!! its adjustable on the front of the radio so easy to keep on top of ..

Its all now installed in the van for keeps now, amp + pre-amp is connected inline too , i was going to go up the hills this afternoon but alas 1x sick child requiring collection from school has put payed to that now..
