Sirio Sy27-3 or 4 with vertical on same mast - suggestions welcome!

Getting back into the hobby and currently have a Sirio 827. I want to put a beam back up - previously used a 3 element quad - but want to mount the 827 on the same mast, so am leaning towards one of the Sirio beams.

Which do you consider the better out of the two beams, taking the pro's and cons of both - FB ratio better on the 3 element as is the bandwidth, but gain is slightly less by 2.5dB, which is less than 1/2 an S point. (Space constraints are not an issue and the price difference is negligible)

I want to retain a vertical antenna. If I use the 827, how far above the beam does it need to be? If the radials are an issue, can I just remove them and let the beam be the radial (doubt it) or should I get a cheap silver rod etc instead or put one of several mobile aerials I have on top of the beam? (The vertical would just be for spotting and local work)

Any suggestions greatly received - especially any real life examples that you are using. I've trawled the interweb and not really come to any definitive conclusion.

Thanks in advance

Adrian

Leave off the radials, or just use a cheaper 5/8 wave without them

The 4 element beam might only be marginal when it comes to gain, however the side rejection is better and the directional path narrower. emoticon I would go for the 4 element, with a 5/8 wave silver rod or Gainmaster if you want something a bit more up market emoticon

I must admit, I was leaning towards the 4 element, until i saw someone say the FB ratio was crucial - I hadn't even considered the side rejection - which is maybe more important to me - good point - plus a little extra foward gain is not going to hurt emoticon .

And reading my original post, I guess, take the radials off the 827 (cheapest option) and if it doesn't work - get something else .. I didn't really fancy the 827, 10 or so feet higher above the beam .. emoticon

Thanks for the quick reply!

if you take the ground elements off the sirio make sure the antenna is grounded to the beam under it . i'd choose more forward db gain over more rear rejection ...... and the more beam elements you can afford/work with the better . after 4-5 elements you're looking at small gains . that 2'5 db is almost equal to doubling or halving your power output.
