Re: the new mobile..... at last
hi keith, does your split charger charge the battery only when needed? i want one that only charges the battery that needs it as i dont want to cook the leisure battery by over charging

Re: the new mobile..... at last
The last 4 cars I have had all had split charging and never had a problem with overcharging a battery, come to think of it, one had twin alternaters. Dont know how they work, they just do! We had one fitted to charge the leisure battery in a caravan on another car, wasnt expensive either.

Re: the new mobile..... at last
Your alternator shouldnt overcharge the second battery, it reads the voltage from the batteries, as the voltage rises the alternator puts in less charge (Amps), once the battery is fully chaged (Which it never is from a car alternator as it only allows 75% of the battery to be charged) the alternator is not providing any further charge.
There are gadgets that will fool the alternator into thinking the batteries are flat right up until they are 100% charged, this allows you to charge the batteries fully and at about 300% faster, because the alternator will work fully all the time instead of progressively working less as the battery charges. I have one fitted to my boat one ordinary 55amp alternator charging 9 x 110ah battery bank and 2 x 110ah starters, works brilliantly
Alternator regulator
Two alternators are usually fitted so one charges the starter system and the other the leisure system, this means there are two completely seperate battery systems and no faults will interfere with the other.
The only time you may over charge one battery is if the two units are not the same, even then there is a small cheap gadget you can put in the charge line that wont allow over charge.
over charge regulator
