Antenna Help Please

Hi, almost ready to go, but was was wondering the best placement for my imax 2000, i would be sticking it to my wall but unfortunately thats not option, so ive got to place it in the garden, is there anything i should avoid like the plague, max length of coaz, and how high should the base be at the minimum, i know higher the better im not to sure if the neighbours would appreciate me sticking a huge mast up emoticon thanks

Re: Antenna Help Please

hi mate without going to much into mind boggling facts about antenna set up and the like a few good tips which worked for me when i was a freshman, are get your swr down to its lowest ,looking for around 1.5 or less at the frequency youll use the most i.e were all calling on [sign in to see URL].
try to site it away from obstructions like trees or sides of houses or large metal objects e.g in the middle of the lawn would work but in the real world sometimes a 8ft shed at the bottom of the garden will help secure your pole, so the signal can "get out and receive"without being refelcted before its had a chance to [sign in to see URL] with your particular antenna a good grounding counterpoise at relavant [sign in to see URL] means in your case, try to fix the metal base of the imax at about 20 feet up,like you said the neighbours wont like it anyway but at 20 foot this gives any resonant reflected rf(kind of left over signal)a chance to go out of harms way back to [sign in to see URL] will help to cure any interference you may cause to your neighbours tvs, landlines, and radios when you transmitt on sideband and am,(not so bad on fm)and try and keep it as far from power, phone lines not only for your safety but this will reduce static noise on your receive and help you hear those weak far off stations. Re: Antenna Help Please

Good advice from previous post.

I would site it as high as you dare, Imax is a big antenna, but strangly enough it looks bigger when its lower, if you know what I mean emoticon

SWR is THE most importent thing when setting up an aerial. Coax can be as long as you like, within reason, but you dont want joins if you can help it, and any joins must be done with 50 ohm connectors (PL259)

Bigger and higher IS better for HF, also the higher your aerial is the less likely you are to cause interference.

Good luck, put up some pics for us emoticon

Oh, and bury your coax if possible, this will limit the signal coming from the coax, causing interference, troubles with swr and make the aerial more efficient emoticon

i'll come & give you a hand & give general info as an when Carl, first find the site for Ariel then we can figure best way to secure it???
easiest way is to sink a 15 ft scaff pole in ground around 4ft concrete it ,then a scaff clip top & bottom so you can lower your anttenna on a 20ft scaff pole???
a ground wire would be nice of back of radio ??
