Which one?
OK, I'm in France,
I want a new rig that will work for freebanding straight out of the box.
The rig I have now seems to either be broken or I am getting no sifgnals at all on any freqz. Is that posible from an AM/USB/LSB 40 ch
on a A99 aerial?
I dont want to buy a new rig if I am not going to get anyone to listen/talk to.
I am in the countryside with nearest large town some 30k away but surely I should hear something?

Re: Which one?
Hi, what sort of radio are you after?
A CB style rig or a ham style radio?
For the CB style there are those on here can help you far better than I.
For the ham style, a lot depends on your budget. Whether you want to go mobile of not? You're also unlikely to be able to buy new out of the box ham radio thats opened up for 11 metres etc. Although 99% of ham shops will opebn the radio up for you FOC.

Re: Which one?
I have a CB background but am interested in receiving anything out there.
Would be nice to experiment further than CB as my French is poor and nothing around here.
Freebanding SSB looks promising enough but from what I can see most boxes need to be modded to be usable.
I am looking for something that will add to my A99 aerial that is around £250/350€.

RCI Ranger 2950DX 10 - 12 metre 24 - 32MHz Amateur Radio
Any plus's or con's about this?
Is there anything else that has a larger frequency range?

Re: Which one?
I have the 2970dx which is the same (Ithink!) except it has 150 watts output, I have been very pleased with mine but you can get radios with far more channels, I have been looking at the Icom 706 and the Yasue 840-getting rare now though but there are loads of others so choose carefully!
Good luck

Re: Which one?
Ranger are a good CB SSB radio, ive owned one and it worked very well. hook it up with a nice astatic teardrop mike or other decent power mike and it should blast out. Like AL said if you want more channels than a 2950 you'll be looking at a HF radio

Re: Which one?
If you want something that looks a bit more 'traditional', have a look at the Superstar SS - 158 EDX, looks very similar to a Cobra 148 GTLDX, 25W SSB output, has a built in frequency counter & covers from 24.265 mHz to 29.655 mHz, and it's a Ranger boarded radio.
Definitely one to think about!
As has already been said, if you need more frequency coverage you need to be looking for a HF radio - but the price then increases!
Let us know what you decide

Re: Which one?
Hi Frogger, if you do have the money go for HF Radio!
then at least when 11m is quiet you still have Echo Charlie to try
As Al says IC706 or FT840 like I have are great for all freeband frequencies
Cheers

I am looking into HF and keeping my open for a bargain as funds might always be available if Mrs Frogger does not know
Only 20€ of ebay my love!!! ;-)
