Re: Cobra 148 GTL-DX

had loads over the years and repaired just as many.... a classic radio, i got myself a mint mk1 148gtl-dx un-moded...... not many nice ones around. easy to fix just as easy to mod. rx can seem low 's meter reading' but there's a really easy cure for this.

Re: Cobra 148 GTL-DX

I have a soft spot for these old rigs but they are a poor design for serious SSB DX work.

The design is heavily influenced by the fact it puts AM performance ahead of SSB.

i.e. the SSB filter is too wide. The filter also has to pass AM signals (on the mk1) so it is very poor wrt selectivity and S/N ratio on SSB. The same wide SSB filter was used on the mk2 so the same issue remains.

Also, the receiver sensitivity is quite poor especially on FM.

On the early mk1 radios the main voltage regulator had a design flaw and could go unstable.

Also the FM audio quality on transmit on the mk1 was very poor due to the bizarre way it was implemented. This was corrected (to a degree) on the mk2.

The PA strip wasn't very linear, the receiver had very poor signal handling with a single ended NPN transistor mixer (but other makes of CB radio were even worse)

But the general build quality was excellent compared to other CBs. Also the audio quality was very good thanks to the use of good components in these areas.

They sound really nice on SSB but that is because the SSB filter is way too wide.

Re: Cobra 148 GTL-DX

Welcome to the site Mr RD250 emoticon

I've had a bit of a love afair with an RD250 or more over the years, raced many of them, hated them, loved them, crashed and burned them. Also restored them. My user name Yamanx is a referal to a Yamaha RD250 I turned into a Manx Norton lookalike for racing in early stock, it was slow and crap, but like all RD's you cant get them out of your skin emoticon

BTW had more RD40'ss than 250's, but my earliest intro to the 250 was the YDS7 emoticon

Sorry a bit off topic emoticon

Re: Cobra 148 GTL-DX

Hi
Yes I had a RD250DX for many years and then an RD350LC.

I really liked the RD250. Really solid bike. I went through the 'bolt on' phase with it at one point with Ex pipes, reeds, Piranha ignition and skinny headgasket and modded airbox.

A couple if times without warning it blew a neat hole in a piston. I guess most people do that at least once!

Two more times the lead balance weights fell out of the crank. This was a design flaw with the model year I had but it didn't stop me repairing it again and again.

I didn't like the YDS7 when I was younger but they now look quite special.

Re: Cobra 148 GTL-DX

I have to say, that I really love my un-modded Mk2 and prefer using it to my FT-817ND.
The Cobra looks really smart and makes me come over all nostalgic!
I agree that the 1st IF filter is too wide, but I can live with that. The S meter isn't very well calibrated either, however I know what I can work and what I can't.
A really pleasant old rig and easy to repair....5/5

Re: Cobra 148 GTL-DX

On my 2nd cobra 148 gtl-dx,a mark 2.
Even after all these years the 148 has firmly implimented itself as the ultimate must have machine, this itself is backed up by the ludricous prices some people will pay on ebay.
Mine is a mint mk 2 with the usual mods, six bands, switchable bleep, 10khz jump so you can get the alpha channels and extensive work on the receive section,it listens very very well, compared to the unmodded one.I have had mk1's and the mk2's and I much prefer the mk2 easier to modify or so I've been told, yet to do one of these.Currently awaiting the conversion info.
Lots of them still in use today,30 years old which speaks dividends on the build quality.Yes the magnums s9 sound awesome, but can you really see yourselves using it in 30 years time?
Even now when I take the old girl outta the box,I go all goose pimply.Sad you may call me,and I'll proberly agree with you,but if there ever was one rig to associate with cb'ing then surely the 148 has to be.it
They look good too.
Like a fool I sold my first 148,wife was having our first and I was skint at the time,so my priorities lay else where, and if you ask me if there was anything I'd regret in having our first son,it was the fact that I had to sell my beloved 148! I really got it that bad.
You learn by your mistakes, and no way will I ever sell my 148,in fact my 3 sons all love the radio so much that they argue amongst themselves,on who is to be left the radio when I part company with this world.I have other radios that they like, yes but nothing like the WOW factor the 148 gives you.
Anyhow rant over,do I like the 148? Definately, would I have another?Definately,Would you sell it,well never say never but it would have to be a ridiculos some to make me sell.
If you have a 148 for sale drop me a line,I will have it in a shot, not to sell but to keep,I suppose my idea of a shack in heaven would be wall to wall 148's I love e'm that much.
The very best regards to all.
