Hi to all,
I have this new edit. (facelift) model albrecht and it works well, but* (allways is but).
its very sensitive rig and audio is super whit orig mic where is inside power adj. and up&down ch keys. rig is same kind like new ones, no high modulations and if adj. mic gain (inside mic) u have to adj. ACL (inside radio)as well, but original adjustment to ssb is just fine. Some radios have prob of FM modulations when use radio at high temp environmental, but there is modification for that prob.
Like u see, there is different kinds of this radio and thats little confusing.
Radio can mod to very large frg cover and can use it channel or frq on dispaly, only full khz shows not like 27555,xx but in ch mode on display there can see also last digit of hz 0 to 9 and its varable,so its very handy.
VFO system can step 1 hz but only 0 to 9 hz and not change next decade digit, like 27550 to 27559 but not go to 27560 only if u tune "VFO" to next step, its not very handy, but no big deal in base stations use or on cb bands.
Reapeter shift is very handy, but not work after channels mods(only in ham bands whitout any mods), if anybody knows how that can work after mod PSE tell me.
There is scan what scan whole 40 ch's on e or f band etc. Squelch work fine but knobs are tiny and not so easy to handel.
Very nice memory what can remember mode and any frg's.
Rf power adjust is ok
Clar is ok to cb use and rf gain also.
Nb and anl works but not so efficent like yaesu radios, but cost is only about 200 to 250 euro or less.
Audio is just good as can be on own loudspeaker (there is also button to low sound) what is down side of radio and whit ext speaker it sound great, only when pressing buttons come beeb "noise" what can be loud on ext speaker. 8ohm impedance.
Display is blue background and I sopost it can adjust dimmer kind, not sure about it, yet.
Power meter its ok, but s meter is not so reliable, but that can regulated.
Power output is on fm and ssb near 25W and can about 40w, but then its more vulnerable to broke and allows no high swr.
so how this rig works on 27555, its good to listening and I dont have any cb station near me so i dont know how it handel big signals, but seems to work great whit this prise radio.
AM is sensitive and no noise from compoments, it can be able to hear very weak stations and i pick up several uk am station here in finland when prop allow it. There is better radios to just am mode, but this is great multi mode rig. Ssb is also great and no noise, realy good (not yaesu ft1000 kindred) FM is maybe better as other modes and u can easyly work and hear weak stations, like i wrote it sounds great and all qso's made it r5+. I use long v antenna or long dipole kind antenna whit 18W and made contacts all over eu (on ssb and fm), mostly that power sufficed fine, but like meny says no power no qso, that not big deal, everybody can buy after burner . So what i can say, 18w and wire antenna works whit this radio, if using 100w linear it give more results and good antenna give more opportunitives. This small multi mode rig supprising me gladly and its good first radio to anybody or back up radio to cbham base. Its very litlle and can mounted very poky place, mike is also litlle like new ham radios. Modifications is very easy whit jumper board(just put jumper in right place and push reset). Only bad is that radio is not fully trimmed to work on cb and eg. tx frequency is not in place, but what can ecpect radios what cost less than 300 euros, those deficients can fixed easily.
Great low cost radio. What can works dx and locals.

Hi,
More about this rig, u can make more sensitive to fm mode to trim t3, but make sure that is same coil on your radio, u can find more informations from alan electric net pages, there is mod's and up dates+services.
I have 400 khz up trx freq and have tune it right, but have to be careful what instruction is right on my radio, internet is good place to find knowlidge, but u have to know what is right and what is wrong..

Hi,
Now ae485 tested.
Good;
Stability,ok
Sensitiviity, ok, not good, can adjust.
Modulations good on fm, ssb have compura and ok modulations if works, easy to use and low cost.
Bad;
 !@#$ adjust bad.
Frequency and oscilator, very bad to adjust, cant find usb and lsb to correct freqs and fm is about 600khz away. Have to make corrections to oscilator freqs, but not good to do out of the ham bands tune.
some compoments was badly soldering and "vfo" switch behave like slack knob. Plc unit make own adjudications. Finals drop power to 4w and blow away if not find reason why plc unit lock the output power. This is typical fault (new finals erf2030, not know how good/bad?)
alc have some props, it cut too early and reason can be rf on mike line or on alc,mic.. unit.
After all this its ok low cost radio on cb, but this is not ham rig (those have same kind faults also) but you get what you payd. I had good moments whit this radio, but RIP now. more propblems than work a well days. There is in albrecht technical web side good info's and some modifications, but i think they just stoped to back up this model.
Ok, u can love this machine when its works, but more grey hair comes if somethink happends.

Hi,
Had a qso whit Rich FB456 and 19tx001 Tjebba whit 10W, Rich said that was loudnes voice whit 10W ever, and Tjebba said most loudnes 56 stations to day, props was good, but something good to albrecht also, now freqs is close to right, only power is drop to 4w fm and peak power to ssb max 11w, i think there is rf on mic/alc systems and plc still have own mind. Finals ?? all seems to be ok, but not give all out. Lets see what i fiqure out next time.

Re: Magnum 257(Albrecht AE 485)

Hi Rich,
Yes, i had converse whit store, and they can meet halfway if buy new radio. I heard also that model sold out whitout guaranteen (only 14days) whit very low prise because that model have a load of problems and not want to sale that, but few customers want that models because it cost very low. Service cost too much and no sence to sell those. i pick it up because got some extra equpments. Same problems in 3900 series too and can get it very cheap, but no guaranteen how long it works.
I think there is other models too and same method in sweden whit copra 200, too meny faults (over 65%) and meny new cb'ers blow it smoke out and they blame radios, too much expences to litlle dealers. So its easyest way to sold out under desk whit out any garantine.
Next radio will be better, i was made offer from ic-706mk2(sale topic), i had it long time a go and not made big impression, but it works fine whit litlle antennas. So, i do best what i can whit my tools and wonder how i can put big modulations like it was whit only one finals. Now it disturb audio (maybe one finals not ok), it gives allmost 30w out, but there is more faults, lsb seems work tx audio better, but give only 20w out, usb audio cut like low adjust alc. I put all drivers down, finals mA, power adj, modulations etc and alc up, but still same kind probs, next is scope measurement, but have to borrow it. mine old 1960 model scope is not so faithfull any more.
Not so big deal if that radio blow away, but need to other radio on to air first. This is funny how close i come whit this model and learn somethig about it, but more what i can see now, furter more like my old rigs (over 20y old) hi hi.
Very best wishes and 73'mike

Yipee
Now its very near to 100% (91%) working, find more than 7 could solders and one final had one leg out of circuit (it was on pcb, up side to down side link, what was half inch away from finals).
there is vr13 also what adjust driver bias and thats are not correct adj. maybe driver units had rf or bad compoment somewhere.
I used radio on 555 today and everybodys likes how it sounds, so there is not much fault left, fm rx freg is not corretly(enough to locals) and some fine tuning, now power is on and ssb swing great.
i got other mic also (ham int relax power mike), Not much difference, original mike is louder but litlle more dx sound like.
So, meny trobuls whit it, but still sounds fine whit under 25W and give dx easily, i have love'n hate feelings about this radio, hi hi
