One of my friends worked an American amateur on 10 meters in the 80's, the American was walking to his girlfriends & was using a HANDHELD emoticon emoticon emoticon And he has the QSL card to prove it.
At the time I use to work all over Europe & well beyond on around 10 watts AM & an inverted V.
The stated gain on the 99 is a dBi, so it's a theoretical gain. The fact is that a half wave dipole cannot have a gain over a half wave dipole, all it could have is a gain as a result of radiation pattern, in the same way a folded dipole & a few others do.
Also the fact that they claim a VSWR of below 1.7 & an impudence of 50 ohms with no radials is a clue to the fact that it is inefficient. As a half wave dipole has a impedence of 72 Ohms & the only way to lower that without loss is by the use of radials & the number of radials, the matarials they are made of will all effect the way that the SWR is lowered.
The fact that Antron says the antenna needs to be DC grounded to achieve its claims of SWR & performance is a little concerning. Look this one up for yourselves, but do it before the next thunderstorm, then look up antenna basics & work out the correlation between needing a DC earth & what it's real impedance is in relation to current & voltage being 90 degrees to each other & then work out how efficient this antenna is.
A good start source for DC earthing is the link below

granted its not the best aerial money can buy but after all it is a "CB" aerial designed for use in america where its main goal was to cope with strong winds, and it does that well, is it really worth slating it so much?

I agree here, I don't think the Antron 99 does anything better or worse than any other 1/2 wave vertical antenna, but at the end of the day the price is reflected in the fact that the antenna is made to stand up to harsh weather, okay so some have snapped apparently but were I live an aluminium antenna just simply is not not going to last as long as a fibreglass one will. Also there are not too many other homebase 11m antennas I know of that can be put together in about 2 minutes like the Imax 2000 or Antron 99.

It's worth noting that the most popular multi band antenna ever designed is the G5RV, yet it's also deaf on RX & inefficient on TX, by comparison to other multi band antennas.
At the end of the day if someone has an antenna that they feel has been good value for them, as long as they do not belive so blindly, then they are right.
I, for example, love coax fed random wires & have had some amazingly good contacts on several differnt bands for less than £20. But I know that by comparison to the crystal specific inverted V's I used a few years ago, it's a massive compromise.

Lets not get of the subject here. Its Trash most of the opposition are trash so do you buy this trash or that trash. OR MAKE YOUR OWN and if its trash you can laugh at it because it cost didly.
Its the outlandish claims made by the manufacturer that's worse than selling yes you guessed it TRASH.
