Re: Superstar 3900/F

Classic looking rig again. mine always reminded me of my cobra 148 back in the old days. except it had the new blue display.

cant fault audio or TX worked mainly static mobile with a Silver Rod no complaints apart from it needing a frequency counter.

only got rid of mine because I wanted a full HF rig hence the FT840

Hi,

I have now superstar 3900 el, balck face whit blue pulps. first feeling was litlle disapointed, because i had about 20 y ago same rig what (i guess) works better.
This new model is all most same radio, all most same parts and all most same PCB.
But new model have some issues, first, back light system give interferece (loads) and have to removed transformer out of board.

second issue was receivers sensitivity/back ground noise. This I had fixed whit changed first IF amp. trans. to better and some diodes also. Only sad think is i had to reduce rf gain or radio will be bloc down.
this prepair helps but not do any moracle because this kind radio have not so good rf design, but how ever its help and give more sensitivity and noise goes down a litlle bit.
third issue is bad noise, interference etc. management, but there can readjust noise blanker to better (not perform yet)
thats was main issues and maybe i try better filtters next.
All in all, now radio do average job.

Im tested this receiver whit albrecht 485 and my friends lincoln (he was working same stations) and seems to be ok now, albrecht and lincoln can still hear litlle better stations whit qrn and albrecht NB and ANL works much better. ss3900 NB and ANL is not bad, its work about in same level whit my kenwood.
SSB and AM is better than Fm receiving but FM is "ok" if adjust detectors coil. ofcourse, coils of receiver got to be adjust also, but then its better to do whit sign. gen.
Now receiver can hear better than it was before but like you read its not miracle radio but do the job and works just fine.

Transmitter was ok, but like you know. original mic is not good at all, i have old haam international relax mic and that realy get radio a live. it swing power realy up whit out strangle signal (ofcourse if every adjustment is wide open then u have bad audio)
Thanks to meny stations from europe who gave me realy good audio reports, no problem whit tx.
one common issue is a freguencys what is not exactly correct, but it can tune tx to right whit coarse and fine tuning rx. that coarse not go exactly to 0 freg, but quite near (thats unfinished work from my side)
also freq drift is litlle problem but not bad and can fixed out also, seems to oscilator is a litlle impact to temperature (my shack have 10 dgr diff in evenins maybe more. hah ha)
ok, this radio works quite well and not so bad what it was before tuning. this radio is bargain to go SSB working and good radio to make experimentation to RF world, because its made by big "good" old time compoments.
ps i dont like blue lights

hello,
now i had tested ss3900 (mdificated) and i had two radio here whit it, kenwood ts480s and icom ic-r1500. I could say that superstar can heard same stations on ssb mode what those two others, its only marginals signals what not hearded, because of qrm and qrn, but ss3900 can handlle quite good interferences, im litlle suprised that.
i have this radio on my car now and seems to be good there, ofcourse its not easy and litlle big, but do the job.
im not using any amp. there, but i had several qsos whit ss3900. litlle more power make it easyer, but not nead if propacations is on.
next time ill review about my kenu ts480sat.
superstar 3900 is easy way to ssb and "dx"

Yes, I've got the ss3900 eft also. Are you still using the original mike? How are you finding it?
If not what mike are you using?

Thanx

I'm using a LESON TW-232. I must say the original mic is a heavy well made and does the job but I'm lazy and just want to press the transmit bar rather than hold a mic (Home Base Set Up Only).
