Re: Callsigns

never mind about mentioning your call on here lads - just DON'T mention you do anything to do with CB on air - as there are a LOT of "sniffy " buggers on AR ( a lot of whom FORGET whence they came ) emoticon and CB is still a taboo topic in places

i know of MANY hams who where into cb before getting their licence and are now hypocritical decryers of 11 meters - and some of the WORST offenders are newly licenced emoticon

i have had my licence for 30 odd years - i came FROM CB - it got me INTO amateur radio - and for that i am greatfull -BUT the appeal of AR has waned with me - no one wants to "rag chew " these days - its all DX - BLOODY CONTESTS - AND DIGITAL MODES

( white stick not into computery things - him not have such things when young - just pencil and paper aided by mk 1 brain ) emoticon

and in the last year or so i have talked to may be 10 people on amateur radio - but 15 in one evening on 11 meters ( much more friendly )

+ of course the "higher " bands like 28 mhz will be abandoned well virtually so when the sunspot cycle declines again - which is odd given that 11 meters (27 mhz ) always seems to be "open " to somewhere regardless

anyways all the best to you guys taking and congrats to those who have passed your ticket emoticon

just dont become an amateur SNOB denying your starting point PLEASE - its ALL radio at the end of the day and without CB i recon ham would have died a death long ago

( ducks and waits for outraged hams to attack me for such heretical thinking ) emoticon

I've had my ticket for 14 years now (jesus, I feel old, and I'm not even 30 yet! haha).

I find myself 80% of the time on 11m these days, as the relentless contests on HF and the doddery old buggers on 2m have sapped any passion I had for those bands. I use PSK31 on HF mostly, but beyond that, HAM radio just doesn't excite me as 11m does.

Long Live 11m and the good old days of being a PIRATE!

YYAARRGHHH!!!!!!

Re: Callsigns

yea - know what you mean mr weetabix - every weekend bloody contests on hf and down here in the southwest static on 2 and above

But , the one advantage of having a ticket ( if you can be arsed ) is the wealth of tech knowledge out there and available in AR books - from some of the older calls ( i must confess to cringing sometimes when i hear "tech " discussions on air between some of the new licencees ) - not that i am decrying the foundation licence - but back in the mists of time when i took my ticket ( c&g 2 part'er ,equivelent to the "advanced "?? now ) one had to know a lot of stuff to get through -AND you dont start learning till you get on air (imo )

as i have mentioned in my intro - i have come back ( was i ever away ?? ) to 11 meters after many years and that after being away from AR for several owing to having to care for my late wife etc - in fact ( and you may laugh at this - i did not even know that they had allowed everyone HF access - shows how out of touch i was )

BUT boy had it changed - 2 m and up ?? silent a lot of the time - all sorts of "wierd " calls like 2e0 xxx and a LOT of people just ignoring calls - UNLIKE 11 m where i was welcomed back and have talked to a LOT of people in the last few months

ANOTHER thing i found is that cb is much more "user freindly " for us disabled people , for the last 2 years i have asked for a lift to a local rally ( i am no longer allowed to drive owing to my eyesight ) and the arthritics make using public transport a real hassle as i cant "mobalise " far on foot these days

NO ONE could be bothered - and this from a club /rally that I started 28 years ago emoticon and yet discusiing a local CB event on air last week - i have been offered a lift to the event - and even an offer of bringing a trailer for my moby scooter if needed so i can drive round the site of the event - all from someone i have never met - would THAT happen with an amater event - GTF it would emoticon

i also had offers of help with antennas if i needed them - and the whole is far more friendly and caring than AR is any time emoticon emoticon

as i have always said - there is more to being a ham than having a call - something sadly that many forget it seems ( may be just a sign of the times ?? )

I sometimes wonder if the comaradery of CB is why the AR fraternity is so sniffy towards us ??

any ways sorry for the long rant - but beleive me - i am appaled at some of the attititudes in AR these days - was never like it when i got my ticket - every one helped everyone - but today it seems that "screw you jack " is the rallying cry

ho hum

best 73 to all

Old post I know, but I love Whitesticks words of wisdom. I really do. I am a Ham tech, and although I love radio, I really find comfort in 11 meters. I just can't add anything more to what whitestick has already said. emoticon

Cheers Brother

Agreed on all. I'm also a licensed amateur, but it just boggles my mind how much so many hams get triggered whenever they hear "CB" or "11m". When asked why, they complain about all the foul language and abusive behavior. Sure, there's some of that, but many of us don't associate with it. We run like hams, just without the FCC-issued callsign.

The best response is to point them to 7200khz, 14,310 (or whatever it is on 20m - sorry if I've got that freq wrong) and just about anywhere on 75m and ask them what they think about the foul language and abusive behavior there. At least where I live, that's far worse than I what I hear from local CB operators - they mostly run things clean and respectably.

I can't help but think about a quote by Jack Nicholson's character in the film Easy Rider:

They'll talk to ya and talk to ya and talk to ya about individual freedom. But they see a free individual, it's gonna scare 'em.

Re: Callsigns

I just tell them to complain to the ham operators on 11m. Here in Aus, most of our riffraff went up to 477MHz UHF CB. 11m is full of hams operating IC7300s with the diode popped

In all seriousness, I can think of 3 operators who don’t have a ham license and one of those is going for his finally after giving up his “experimenters license” that gave him an “access all areas” pass, after they jacked the price up from $200ish a year to well over $2K a year !!
