Can somebody identify this balun?
This is probably a daft question, but I don't know much about baluns apart from that they match the coax to the antenna/twinfeed impedance.
There are 16 double windings on it and the wire is slightly over about 1mm in diameter, the core is about 35mm diameter and is about 15mm in depth.
Is it a 1:1, 4:1, 6:1 or 9:1? and is it a current or transformer type?
Also by looking at it, what type of power rating is it likely to be?
Thanks folks.

Re: Can somebody identify this balun?
Can't really tell, as I can't determine which connections go where, but given the bifilar nature of the windings it looks to me to be a 1:1 current balun. but I'm happy to be corrected on this.
As for power rating, this is determined mainly by the ferrite material rather than wire guage, but I'd say a couple of hundred watts would be OK.

Re: Can somebody identify this balun?
Its bifilar so no options here its got to be 4:l Patrick on what looks like a yellow core unless its overwound. Whats the diameter of the toriod? and the depth? that governs the rating (2" dia good for 750w 1" about 400w)and of course if its a yellow core its no good for the bottom 3/4 of the HF spectrum. ie its a (a UHF jobby or top hf very low power)
If the windings are 2 to 1 then the ratio is the square of the turns ratio.ie 4(2x2).
So if you want a 9:1 you need 3x the turns ratio(3x3=9).
If its an UNUN then thats different again. I've stuck a few pics on this web page to help you out here they should help you identify it by using a resistance meter and tracing the solder links.Sorry its all hap dash and hickledy pickledy but its my co webpsite (spare page) and i had to upload it all in a rush But copy it all to you pc and keep for reference mate.

Re: Can somebody identify this balun?
Hi John, thanks for the reply, the toroid is 35mm wide by about 15mm deep, it is a white toroid John, what band is a white toroid for?
Thanks.

Re: Can somebody identify this balun?
White is 1mhz-25mhz but that size is very small 10-50w ish qrp i'm afraid.
100w ssb for short periods but not fm/am, probably be safe for 200w intermittent. If you have another 4:1 then attach them bach to back, stick Tx on one and Dummy load on the other end. Tx a constant 100w carrier for 20 sec, stop and feel the temp if hand warm then its at its max rating Patrick.
Its the ruddy great red ones you want for your super 2kw amp mate. John.
