Thinking about setting up a packet/digital station on 11m

I've been rolling this idea around in my head for a while. I am thinking about setting up a high power (100W) packet/digital station. I would be using a PC running Ubuntu and a FT897 and maybe a NVIS antenna. I like the idea of having a packet/digital station that everyone in the local area can use, and the idea of a network of FB stations.
What do you think?

Yes, not a bad plan. I have had ups and downs with digi modes but I do have an old machine I can set up to work PSK31, probably.

If you are into this, then I will try it and post on here my results. I know of one or two other 11m users use digi modes, so might be fun emoticon

Re: Thinking about setting up a packet/digital station on 11m

Sorry it's been so long, between the new baby, hunting, and trying to find a new job I haven't been online in a while.
I'm putting togther all my parts and trying to see what I'm missing. At the moment, I have a computer that I'm going to try to load DSL (Damn Small Linux), an FT-897 that needs to be opened up, and a RIGblaster Data Jack Plug & Play soundcard interface. I'm trying to find an antenna for digital work. I have a long steel whip that might work. I don't see this being that hard to put togther, I'm hoping I can get it to work long distance.

Just a quick update, I've got my extra computer set up with Puppy Linux (www.puppylinux.com) and am getting the set up between the radio and the computer now.

Re: Thinking about setting up a packet/digital station on 11m

Hey guys,

I am working PSK31, RTTY and SSTV on a regular base from home and portable:

My Home equipment is the FT857D, a CAT Interface, a Lenovo W530 Laptop, HAM Radio Deluxe and Digital Master and my Blizzard 2700.

Portable I use a FT817ND, a Wolphi Link interface, my Androidphone with Software from Wolphi llc and a HF-P1 Antenna or a Homemade Wireantenna with GFK Pole and Tuner.

I would like to meet other Freebander on the Frequency in Digimodes.

Running packet on 11m sounds like an interesting idea, but I'd disagree with the NVIS antenna, which is better suited to lower frequencies.

Set out in the clear and preferably on a hilltop, a decent vertical would cover a good area and if other stations set themselves up I see no reason why this couldn't work.

I run PSK31 beacons on 11m during the summer quite regular. 27.500.

I would love to make it over the pond, so get a sked together and we'll make it happen :-)
