Power Usage

Dear All,

I have been having very mixed results this summer despite being 400 feet above sea level with uninterrupted views of the sea in my QTH in southern Europe. I use a half wave dipole. My experience seems to range from 9 +30 to not being hear at all especially into Southern America.

Does anyone have firm information on the use of high power by stations ? I am wondering if this is why I can't be heard ? I also noticed the same stations seem to be working the world day in / day out particularly in the US. Any insight / info would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Hi there, what aerial are you using? Not as many stations using high power as you would think, but the antenna is the key emoticon

A lot of the "big guns" use directional antennas like yagis or quads.
If you can't run one try upgrading you dipole to a 5/8 vertical which will have a little more gain but lower angle of radiation for DX working.
Power is not the thing. Save your money & upgrade your antenna.

I hope this helps.

Hiya balacleigh.
As 26dt630 and yamanx1 was saying the antenna is the key more important than lots of power. 5/8 vertical would be good. I use a home made slimjim very cheap and easy to build with a low takeoff angle around 6-8 degrees Iv spoken to several south american counteries, australia south africa on 20-40 wats when the conditions where good without any problem also indonisea and papa new Guinea.
It is fedd with coax but I am thinking of feeding it with twinfeeder the antenna is about 60 feet asl and 30 yards from the sea
