Re: Sunspot Cycle 25!!!!

We have 3 active regions and one real sun spot at the moment 9 August 2020. It’s picking up, but there is a long way to go

Finally starting to see some activity above 20MHz.

I've been hearing a lot of Australia coming into Northern California lately, both on 11m and the amateur bands. I've made a couple contacts, I'm happy to say, but most of the time, my little 100W isn't cutting through.

I see many sunspots in your future.

I must admit, it’s been hard work to get a signal out of Australia, over to the other side of the hockey puck :-)

Managed to get in on 40m CW, but 100W of voice isn’t cutting it either

Must be something wrong with your setup, I can work the states any day of the week on 40m on an inverted V, with 100w

Re: Sunspot Cycle 25!!!!

I was noticing things getting worse. Been running a mag loop made from scrap coax. Found I had some losses in the loop joins. I’ve since upgraded it with 1” aluminium flat bar and it’s made a huge difference. Trouble is I am now getting flash over on the capacitor with as little as 25W

the capacitor is a piston style made with PVC conduit. While the conduit is rated above the voltage, I think it is the RF that is breaking it down and sadly turning the loop into a CW to smoke signal converter. You’ll be working away with an almost 1:1 SWR 100mW return on 100W then the swr starts to increase. Suddenly it jumps. If you drop the power to 5W and retune, you’re ok, but as soon as the power is raised again, the swr jumps. Pull the antenna down and there is a big black mark somewhere on the capactor assembly.

I’ve used some different materials and extended the reliable power to 50W but the dollar is still illusive. Back to the drawing board

Overall, since upgrading the radiator, I reckon I’ve picked up 2s points or at least 12dB. Managed a 559 on a 1W Pixie one Sunday afternoon.
