Contest qso's
Hi all, a real newbie question for you..
I hear a lot of "cq contest" type calls, where they seem to contact a lot of stations and give them a ref number.
What are you supposed to do with the ref number if anything?
Cheers

Re: Contest qso's
Hi Mark, that ref number I would assume would be a progress number, the stations who have entered the contest competition can win a prize or a certificate or something depending on the number of stations worked in a given time, so if I was entered in the contest and made say 155 contacts so far and you called in I would give you a ref number of 156, when the next person calls in I would give him a reference of 157 and so on and so on until the end time of the contest.
At the end of the competition everybody who had entered the contest would submit their logs with all the ref numbers given out and the judges would validate the call signs and work out who worked the most.
The ref number is for the benefit of those who entered the contest to put it a quicker way and does not really matter to those not in the contest, it does however give you an idea how many stations they have worked. I just usually scribble the number they have given me in my log book. ALL CLEAR AS MUD MAYBE! 73s
Notice too the 5 and 9 reports given out regardless of the signal, I remember 1 guy had to ask 4 times for a call sign, and then still give him a 5 and 9!!?

Re: Contest qso's
but remember if you contact these contest stations it is polite to send a qsl card ,because if you are not in their group they need the card to get the points??
same as actvaions if you don't what to send for the card please don't have a number??
i worked 187 stations from 163 sd/ eu124 (shell island)& only got around 40 return their cards???
same as my 30th year activation last year 75 ontacts in all around 20 cards??

Re: Contest qso's
That's a good point about QSL cards for verification. In the 80s I used to QSL 100% when using 4 watts on 27/81 CB radio, most of the contacts sent cards when they said they would, I used to wait until I received their cards before sending them one as I used to spell my full home addresses out for them and get their's off the card to reply!!
I don't QSL now, I just keep a log book, I know some stations who say the contact is not complete until the QSL card confirms it!
I don't know much about contesting on 11m but I would suppose the judges would look up the members list to verify the call signs submitted on club contests?

Re: Contest qso's
Thanks for the clarification guys.
I guess that some of the contests are closed to outsiders, as I was told "this frequency is in use" when answering a qrz ??
I'll stick to standard qso's I think
Cheers

Re: Contest qso's
even normal qso`s are getting to be a nightmare, i sent loads of cards out last month and got a 20% return, i am still waiting for japan and kazakhstan (which i really want) its just plain ignorance.and not in the spirit of DX`ING

Re: Contest qso's
I'm looking for a computer based logbook that's very basic and easy to use.
Anyone got any links to one that I can download? Oh and a decent printable divisions chart?
Thanks
