Project ATU
Here is another project i built, its a simple ATU, it will handle about 100 watts and covers all bands from 1.8 mhz to 30 mhz. The design is a 'T' match. it wasnt finished when i took these photos. it is fully working, parts were from a radio rally, the box was from MFJ it was originally a artifical earth, but as it was it was a empty box for a few quid, the capacitors i already had, the knobs were from Maplins, all together it cost about £15..

Re: Project ATU
Nice work, and nice metal working too - always been one of my (many) shortcomings.
That tapped inductor - how did you decide on the tapping points? Trial & error, or some more precise method?

Re: Project ATU
Hi Andy, the box was from a radio show, found it in the 'junk' box, it was a good find. At one time it was a MFJ artificial earth, but it was stripped bare, so it was just the empty box, I did fashion a new front panel from Ally plate and marked and drilled it for the controls including the square hole at the rear for the in-line out of line switch.
The 'white' inductor was from a old FT 102 i scrapped years ago, i knew it would come in handy one day, the other inductors are hand wound, as for the tapping points its a bit of hit and miss really, but for the high frequencies you dont need to much inductance to get a match, hence the very small inductor this is used above 25 mhz, the white ceramic inductor will do all freqencies down to about 3.5 mhz then the other inductor, the hand wound copper one in the photo is switched in-line to tune the 160 mtr band, i can match my 40 mtr dipole to 28.000 mhz using the matcher, and ive run my TS870 through it at full power 100 watts with no signs of smoke, as said its a simple thing and easy to make, depending on what you want the finished ATU to look like, i like metal work always have done. its supprising what can be made at home with very little in the way of tools.

Re: Project ATU
Excellent, well done Mark.
To compare with, have a look to my QRP ATU. Mine looks like a cheap chineese made, but it works ;-)

Re: Project ATU
Hi Juan, Nice to see your ATU, It doesnt matter to much what it looks like as long as it works, and does what it was meant to do. so Congratulations on the Home brew Equipement.
