Re: auto tuners
Yes, for the most part they do. Depends a bit on the antenna you're trying to tune, because if its resonance is miles and miles from a particular frequency it will struggle, but thats true whether you're on 45, 86 or 11 metres. Manual tuners tend to tune anything.
Just because an auto tuner has band switches doesnt mean it wont go out of band. Linears are the same, ham linears have band switches but they will still tune out of band. Just go to the nearest band.
Automatic ATU's are also adjustable, the capacitors can be fine tuned depending on the band and the aerial. Its not a difficult thing to do and you wont need to take the case off. usually theres a lid or a small panel you can get to to adjust them. Using a small screw driver there are small leds that need to be off (Or on depending on your unit) No transmission is required for this adjustment.
Really it only speeds up the tuning and doesnt alter the range, but all tuners are slightly different
If your thinking of getting a tuner which one are you looking at?

Re: auto tuners
Good stuff, you should do the M3 course it really is the easiest exam you'll ever do. No kidding, not putting anyone down who's done it but if they took someone off the street at random that knew bugger all about radio I reckon they would pass
It will also open you up to use many different bands. You can do what I do and that is use all of them, ham, EC, 11mdx and anything inbetween
Its all good, ham is a little regimental, but 90% of hams have been, and are, freebanders at some point. Even the older ones "once used Echo Charlie". Only a few are up their own bottom, for the most part radio is the passion, not policing it.
The worse hams are the "converted" CBers. They used to be freebanders but now they're God
