my Digital Clock

one of the projects I completed last week is a Digital LCD clock prototype, here:

Image

Sorry about the camera flash hiding some of the display. the Display by the way was taken out of an old electronic typewriter some 20 years and sat in one of my numerous "junk" boxes for a later date.
the Modules it`s made up of are here:

you can see bread board prototyping area to the left, the Power + I/O interface board at the front, the Real Time Clock module with battery back up in the middle (based on the Dallas DS1307 chip), and the Atmel 328P processor board to the right of that, and of course the LCD display at the back.
the Undersides (the Ugly bits) are here:

the little grey Cylider looking thing is a tiny speaker, afterall, what clock worth its salt doesn`t go "Tick Tock"?
yes, it really goes Tick Tock every second! emoticon

enjoy.

Re: my Digital Clock

How is the clock signal generated?
Is it obtained from a crystal oscillator or the frequency of the mains as some commercial models do?

Whatever, a great project - well done!

Re: my Digital Clock

A Good question, and I have to admit even if the pictures had of been better it wouldn`t have been easily apparent.
It`s Crystal controlled, the same as a digital watch, in fact the crystal that I used if For digital watches.

here`s a pic:

The nice thing about using the Dallas 1307 chip, is that it gives a 1Hz sqr wave output on one of the pins too, but can be programmed to Other frequencies (maybe useful in a Frequency counter???).

all the best emoticon

Re: my Digital Clock

In furtherance to this Project, I decided to build a Few of these clocks onto something more permanent.
the results are here:

and the underside:

btw, that Red LED that always seems to be ON in the pics, is just coincidence, it actually flashes ON for half second then OFF for the other half.
the Green LED is just Power ON.
as a side note, these 3 Chips are part of the 100x Atmega 328P`s that I brought and Bootloadered from scratch, with Arduino S/Ware.
