Re: The Aerial
Bit late now, I know, as you've already bought an antenna, but the best and simplest antenna for static mobile use is an unloaded quarter wave. I'll explain:
Normal mobile antennas are physically shorter than they really should be for obvious reasons, and they do this by incorporating a coil of wire somewhere along the length to compensate for the shortness. (without going into inductance, capacitance and so-on.)
A full quarter-wave will be about 8'6" or so in length and has none of the power-wasting loading coils - it works as it is. The efficiency is about 3dB above a normal car antenna and although this isn't a lot when signal strengths are high, it can make the difference at low poundages or with high QRM/N.
The one I use apparently came from a tank, is copper coated steel and painted dark olive green and originally came in several sections, but I soldered most together to make a two-piece antenna - the top slots into the lower section. The mount on the bottom also fits the magmount perfectly.
By the way, I'm also from Devon - don't you go invading my patch on Dartmoor!!
Andy.

Re: The Aerial
thanks andy!
im unsure where in devon you are but dont worry i have places that seem to do better than dartmoor (for some strange reason!) and they are closer to home!
5&9 into 163 div on FM from south devon is good enough for me who needs dartmoor?

Re: The Aerial
Yes - Dartmoor itelf isn't a lot of good, because of all the hills. It is high up, but there isn't a good 'take-off' clear to the horizon. As you said, there are better places, and the one I frequent is on the edge of the moor.
If I told you any more, I'd have to kill you.
