CALLING ON SSB

Hey all.

If you are a first timer user off 11m ssb, here are a few suggestions to get you on the right track.

1. spend some time just listening. You will be amazed what you can pick up by hearing how other stations do their buisness on air.

2. When youre ready, go for your call.
Start with something like this
' cq, cq, cq eleven metre band. 26 alpha bravo one two three (obviously those numbers and letters are just for demo purposes!!) calling cq, cq and standing by.

this is ALL you really need to say. keying the mike and calling cq for over a minute is way over the top and just annoys the hell out of everyone else!! LOL.

when i turn my rig on, i normally give two or three calls out in a five minute period. If i dont get any joy, i simply wait for someone else to call out.

Once you have called cq and someone has responded, something like this '26abc123 this 26xyz789 calling you, over', respond with a friendly good morning/afternoon/ evening and then suggest a frequency to QSY (change) to.

After that its pretty much plain language, you dont have to sound like a pro, a lot of radio users really appreciate a nice chinwag about anything, unless they are a foreign station and your chat is limited to bits ofenglish!

3. do NOT key your mike on 27.555 (12hi) on FM or AM and attempt to check your swr on your meter. this is very annoying as it comes accross to everyone else as a whistle or buzz - simply find a quiet frequency and test there, after you have checked that no-one is on that frequency.

4. DONT give out any personal details - you never know who is listening; unless its an emergency, dont forget this is STILL ILLEGAL and you are risking a fine if you are caught - sorry to sound negative , but, fun though 11 meters is, its still illegal and punishable - although the RIS has enough on its hands dealing with pirate FM stations.

also someone might want to come round your house and nick your aerial - so if you wish to part with some more personal info - send it in an email to be safe.

5. relax and enjoy yourself. all the people you hear on air are there for the same reason as you - to enjoy a natter and marvel in the fact that your voice is being magically sent through the air to someone else, and it isnt costing you anything. (ish!!)

6. LASTLY.. and this is my pet hate...dont whistle into the mike before you call. there is absolutely no reason for you to do this - it was a way years ago that Italian operators tested the output power on SSB on their linear amplifiers, as you need a tone like a whstle to see the power output.
A lot of foreign stations still do this, and i always end up shouting 'have you lost your dog?' or something similar, or just bark. that normally gets the message accross!
