Specific antennas for 11m short skip.

Is there any kind of antenna that favors the shorter sporadic E type skip across the UK?

For long haul skip across the globe (apart from a directional beam obviously), the Imax 2000, Sirio 827 and Sirio vector 4000 amongst others are all top of the heap for long DX.

The shorter Sporadic E or summer skip to UK and the British isles though, anybody experimented with anything that outperforms long haul DX antennas and their lower angles of radiation?

You hit the nail on the head there Patrick when you mentioned angle of radiation, you basically want your signal to have a higher take off angle. the trouble with most cb type antennas is they are mainly verticals and by there nature verticals have a low radiation angle, more so than a yagi. your properbly looking at a radiation angle of more than 45 degrees, Lower antenna height can give a higher radiation angle. theres not much that you can really do with a vertical to get the higher radiation angle other than lowering its height although this is hit and miss, you would have to force the signal higher this can be achieved with a directional antenna.

Whack up a horizontal dipole, good and high if possible complete with choke balun. This will give all angles of high radiation, but you would have to orientate it according to the incoming signals.

I suspect an outdoor inverted V would be a tad less directional so may not need a rotator.

Of course, a dipole for 10/11m can be self-supporting apart from the mounting pole and would be pretty cheap to fabricate using bits from a couple of defunct GP27s.

I may do this myself actually - I used to use one years ago with reasonable results, but not with 'E' specifically in mind.
