Inverted Vee antenna
Hi guys, I'm a complete novice having used a whip antenna outside my shed to get a couple local chats in, but I want something better.
Now at the moment I only have a cobra 19x, my dad used this unit during the original "craze" and he says that he built an inverted vee in the loft space. So question no. 1, my roof is lined with a chicken wire type grid, is this going to act as a faraday cage and soak up my signal?
Now as far as I can tell, the best angle is at 45 degrees, and is it as simplemas one wire goes to the coax core, and the other to the braid?
Finally, I've just found this on another thread:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/antenna-wire-hf-dipole-longwire-ham-radio-receiver-aerial-hf-antenna-qrp-/231162131744, but could I in theory use galvanised steel fencing wire for example?
Lastly, I found a website that calculated 2 lengths of wire approx 6'6"long for 1/2 wave, for the sake of space, can I half this for 1/4 wavelength?

Re: Inverted Vee antenna
Hi there,
Your chicken wire will almost certainly badly effect your signal in the loft.
With 11m, bigger is better, so your 1/4 dipole may well be worse than you whip on the shed.
Speaker wire is a bit small. It will work on low power, but the mechanics of it mean it would probably snap before you could string it up.
This is better

Or just get some electrical wire, twin and earth and strip it back, but this is nearly as expensive anyway.

For calculating the wire length see here, I would just go a little longer and trim it to suit

Re: Inverted Vee antenna
Just as I suspected! In that case I may be able to put it up on a temporary basis outside in the summer using fibreglass poles.
So leading on front this, I'm trying to do it cheaply, therfore, are the silver rods from eBay for about £30 any use?

Re: Inverted Vee antenna
If you're going for a silver rod, go for a 5/8th wave.
Something like this is fairly cheap, need to get it as high as possible.
You'll need coax, connectors etc.

Re: Inverted Vee antenna
Hi Adsy, how much room do you have in your back garden, If you want to put together a very good small Antenna for 11mtr, have you looked at a moxon antenna. very easy to put together with fishing poles. I can help you with design and dimensions. just a tad down on a 3ele yagi, but very close, works well at 15ft . If you are interested, let me know, you just need to source 4x 3mtr whips, some wire , at last 12 gauge and I can help you with the spreaders, boom will only be 500mm long.

just ask. I am always happy to help, i am none profit. ;-))

Re: Inverted Vee antenna
The moxon idea looks great, but realistically for space reasons I think I'm going to have to go down the silver rod route. Although I may have to give the moxon construction a go in the summer, I'm not realistically going to get any antenna to 18 feet high. Best I can do with stability for now would be an 8 foot post I think.
