Solar Cycle 25
Its here!
Well not so you would notice too much right now, and we've still got another year or more of quiet HF bands (Not including E layer which, usually arrives in the spring here in 26) But we have had at least 1 possibly 2 sunspots from cycle 25.
FBDX started in 2007, which was the solar minimum for cycle 24, we have grown and grown throughout that period, even during lean propagation periods, like now.
But when the prop starts to arrive, and it will, FBDX will have to get its act together and update itself, that's down to me
In anticipation, I am working on new website, new cluster, etc.
But in the meantime, keep the faith There is still the odd grey line, and this year will be better than last.
See here for Solar Cycle 25 update source

Re: Solar Cycle 25
Well that's good news; the only way is up from here. Some of the predictions I'm hearing for Cycle 25 are a bit gloomy though. But the science isn't really exact enough at this point to make predictions. Perhaps we'll get lucky.
http://prop.kc2g.com/mufd-legacy/ is a good resource to pick out some of those brief openings that seem to be happening from time to time. I heard a Brazil station calling on 27.555 last week, but they faded out as fast as they came in; I couldn't reach them.
Looking forward to the new site!

Re: Solar Cycle 25
Been Watching Suspicious Observers on the Googletubes. Seen a ouple of small sunspots cross our path this last fortnight, and the hot spots seem to be picking up a little, that said, DX across Aus on 11m has been coming in and fading away in minutes. All part of the propogation lottery.

Re: Solar Cycle 25
A little sporadic E conditions this evening on 27.395 - lots of Arizona stations making it into Northern California. Lasted about 30 minutes or so, but I was able to get a few contacts... just enough to give me hope.

Re: Solar Cycle 25
Strong signals across the Tasman from East coast Aus on 20m. S3-5 with only a Watt. , but anything above 18MHz has been very quiet. Almost nothing otter than interstate stuff on 11m though
Another hot spot just came about, so there might be a little, but it’s early days in this cycle. No real spots other than the ones last month so far

Re: Solar Cycle 25
Some interesting sunspot info and a little solar flare on camera
https://youtu.be/hsQ8ollJ7QM
21MHz opened up a little yesterday. On the New Zealand SDR beacons from Japan, west coast USA and Peru. WSPR was getting carabean stations and the station on South Orkney
Sadly nothing much north of 21. 26-28MHz fairly dead.

Re: Solar Cycle 25
Picked up some .au into Northern California about a week ago. My little radio wasn't able to make the trip back, but heard them for a good 20 minutes on 27.395.

Hi Dave 26FB001.
We are confident, we wait for better moments and we know they will come!

Great! However, I sincerely hope that this board on runboard remains active
It's true ... maybe it's limited in some things but it's practical and functional, "minimal" and "old school"... I like it very much

Re: Solar Cycle 25
11M has been spotty here with a couple big days, Yesterday was really good but all shorter single hops but it lasted for over 4 hours and well into the night, it finally faded out about 11pm CST. It just stayed on and locked, I found an AM Group on 27.505 in Ohio and was able to copy all the local members as they had their ragchew which was nice to find for me because I was looking for some frequencies to add the the Johnson Viking Messenger and frankly I can't run with the fellas on 6, 11 etc so that was really neat to find a quiet AM group.
Still looking to get some longer skip and we shall see, I may have a steep take off angle with My antennae setup, an inverted V in the attic. One other thing I thought was neat was using the iphone to monitor na5b.com and listen for my signal on their sdr radio which is in D.C., I listen to others as well in EU but I don't make the trip yet, it's a nice extra confirmation when your calling to hear that you are making it through!

Re: Solar Cycle 25
For 11m you’ll want a take off angle of say 15-20 deg for most sparodic E. You’ll want a good throw at say 5-8 degrees for the real long haul.
I’m a fan of Short Tuned Loop or Magnetic Loop antennas. You get a good horizontal throw without the trouble of a ground or counterpoise. That said, they are tight in their tuning so 50-100KHz at 27MHz is usual, but if you fit a variable capacitor, you can cover 24-29 at close to the efficiency of a dipole but with an element that’s barely a meter wide.
Effectively they work as a resonant tuner circuit made up of a single turn and a capacitor at the top. Coupling your feedline to the loop is usually inductive with a smaller loop inside the loop, though you can use a gamma match or as I use, a toroid coupler with the antenna as the 1 turn secondary
Another good vertical I’ve read about is the 0.64 wave. Throws out a nice low lobe, slightly longer than a 5/8, but an extra dB and a bit over a 5/8. But you won’t fit that in your attic.
Anyway. While I’m hearing all the E skip in the US, were seeing little or none here in the Penal
colony. It will come.
