possible or not?

ok guys here goes...ive been brainstorming all morning lol

i cant be homebase due to neighbours ect so have to do everything mobile.....

although im doing good on the megawatt 3000 im thinking of a beam of some sort...

however i was thinking putting up a beam and taking it back down ect just for a couple hours dx was a bit of a hassle due to the size of the things!

so....would it be possible to use a 6m beam...trimmed down slightly with a atu as a half sized kind of beam?......i appreciate its going to lose gain but surely it would perform better and have a greater gain than my magmount?....

its just that being half the size its going to be much easier to take down and put up ect......

if anyone has any ideas on my brainstorming any input would be great!

cheers

dave

Not a clue here but your idea sounds interesting, if it would work its something I could put up here! Fingers crossed.

well.....although you may not have a clue at least you replied!!! thankyou emoticon

just something else to add to my brainstorm......

could it be possible to make it with wire and have coils to shorten the antenna?.....

thing is down here its full of nosey tourists whereever i go....so the less obvious the better.....and the smaller the antenna the more chance i have of putting it up on my own too! lol

Anything is possible, providing you can tune it. There is no laws that say antennas have to be 1/4 1/2 5/8 etc. Its only that these are tunable. Complete randon sizes are possible, if they are tunable.

I think you have a good idea, but there is another factor which is radiation pattern, effectiveness. OK so you build a 1/4 wave beam, it tunes to 1,1:1 SWR. It doesnt mean it'll work very well, it could just be a big dummy load.

For your situation, I would choose the SY27 Dipole. Its small enough to put up and down as required, its directional (In two directions as basically it just the driven element of a beam, without the reflector or directors).

It works too, you will have excellent reports for DX using it horizontally. Works well vertically but has no gain, its omnidirectional when used vertically.

In addition, it cost about £27, and would easily out perform a A99, Silver rod etc for DX when use horizontal. Downside is, its crap for ground wave and any sort of local work. For DX though the FDB for its size and cost.

aha thanks dave.....hmm radiation pattern...thats the bit im not to certain on.....so it could cause problems...bummer..

yea i have looked at that antenna and thought about it...it maybe the best option

The first aerial I ever had was a dipole, wasnt very good as I remember but I only ever used it vertical. Think I may get one of these to try horizontal, they seem small-compared to a beam-and they are cheap! I feel a purchase coming on!!!

Cheers Dave. Could this go on the same mast as a vertical or would it interfere with it?

if you are putting on same mast put them a 1/4 wave ie 9".it will act as a ground plane an may give you better low radation for groundwave contacts??
