mobile aerial for mast?

I have a mast for mobile use but its not sturdy enough for my A99, not without guyropes anyway so was wondering if a mobile ant would fit on it, would the mast serve as the groundplane or would I have to put a ground plane onto the bottom of the ant?
The mast is 50 foot and whips around a lot with a bit of wind. I now have a metal roofbox on the mobile and cant get swr down and its a big job to take it off.

Hi Al, if you want to experiment a bit you could try welding a Lightweight plate to top of mast and put Mag mount on the Twig.

There should be enough metal to give you Ground plane?
Not sure how the direction path would go, maybe someone with more knowledge could let you know if its possible?

Cheers

Cheers Tony, that would be easy, I never thought of that! May be able to use the A99 after all coz I found I can lock the top sections of the mast to stop them going up so would be quite stable then, will have to try it when I have a bit of spare time (not this week!) Seems ages since hollidays, am ready for another one now.

thats it keith if your sat really high your antenna doesnt need to be so high off the ground. If i was going to use a 50 foot mast i think i would guy it, thats pretty high up and it would only take a gust of wind to bend it

use a £10 DIPOLE horzontally, works well as you can direct your signal where you want, or better still buy 2 and use one as a reflector

kieth.just wondering if you know(i.e used a meter)if your alternator ever powered your kl500 up to full output?my kl400 seems to work fine with good reports but will only do 200 am/ssb.im ready for the mobile summer and have a genny on the van anyway so will eventually try it out with a big psu.could it be possible that 1 of my output trannys is dead or would it not even power to 200watts if this were true.cheers mate if you or anyone else can shed light on this.
