Amateur radio users on 2 metres

I've never used 2m before, or 70 cm for that matter, always been of HF and for some reason I cant explain VHF feels like a different place, with different strangers.

I bought a 2m radio the other day and although I havent transmitted on it yet, as I've decided to listen for a while to sus it all out, one thing I have noticed is the speed at which operators say their call sign.

Whats that all about then? Is there some kind of competition to say it the fastest? I cant understand any of them, they chat away perfectly normal and then when they come to the call sign bit its dililip! What?

Weird. emoticon
